Stephen Johnson is a 2007 SS/P/3B with a 6'2'', 175 lb. frame from Poway, CA, who attends Poway HS. Johnson has a large frame with present strength throughout. He does everything well. Defensively he has plus actions with nice footwork and soft hands. Johnson gets to balls well with fluid and athletic actions. Also showed good range, and made a nice diving stop up the middle in game action. Has arm strength to make the play in the hole. At the plate he hits from a straight away stance with a quick bat and excellent balance. The ball jumps off his bat showing strength and power. Johnson hit multiple homeruns during batting practice and hit the ball with authority in the games. He has a professional swing who can hit for average and power. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with good arm action. His fastball topped out at 85 mph with zip through the zone. He also changes speeds on his breaking balls keeping hitters off balance. Johnson throws strikes with pitchability, and did not allow a hit in his two innings of work. He is a two-way prospect with great upside and is a must follow. He is a very good student as well.

Stephen Johnson is a 2007 SS/P from Poway HS, residing in Poway, CA, with a 6'2" 170 lb. frame. Johnson was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase. He has a strong, potentially physical type build. He is well proportioned with a strong lower half, suggesting that he may grow out of the SS position. A right handed hitter, Johnson hits with a pinched knees set-up, with his feet spread out and a slightly open stance. His hands work and produce a steep swing plane. Johnson has some bat speed and flashes present day gap/down-the-line type power, in particular to the pull side. On defense Johnson can be a bit showy with the actions but he has ability. His arm tracks well and he is a good fielder in a relatively stationery area. His range and footwork are best suited for 3rd base. He sets up to the ball well in a workout situation and shows seemingly strong ability, but at higher game speeds he is not as efficient. Johnson also has a chance to help a college team on the mound. He certainly has good feel for the baseball. Pitching from an over the top slot, Johnson has a pretty loose arm though with a little backside wrinkle in his arm stroke. In late January he only showed up to 82 mph with the FB, but has been above that before, in the mid-upper 80s. He gets the FB on a good angle through zone and should be an effective ground ball pitcher. His 11/5 shaped, 65 mph CB was his best pitch with his ability to throw it for a lot of strikes. Though it basically has rolling action, Johnson gets ok depth on that pitch because he is able to spin it well, if not hard. He also showed some change-up feel. PG was notified in January 2006 of an early verbal commitment to Arizona State. With his college commitment secured, Johnson now can focus on raising his draft profile, though it appears that his best draft prospects will come after going to college.

Stephen Johnson is a 2007 MIF/RHP from Poway, California, with a 6'1", 170 lb. frame. Johnson has a presently strong body and it shows in his swing. He hits from a slightly open stance with good bat speed and loft in his bat path. Johnson closes his stance well in his swing and is balanced and gets leverage that gives him present raw power. Defensively he has good actions with soft hands and solid arm strength. During the showcase games he had a slow release at times, but that is easily correctable. Johnson showed good velocity on the mound for a 2007 topping out at 83 mph. He showed good pitchability, and had good late break on his curveball at 59 mph. Johnson is a strong player with good actions, strength in his swing, and present arm strength. He was one of the top 2007 prospects at the event and needs to be followed closely. Johnson is also a very good student.
