Tant Shepherd is a 2007 right hand hitting 3rd baseman from Flower Mound HS, residing in Flower Mound, TX. Shepherd has a strong, powerful build on a physical 6'0" 195 lb. frame. He did not play as well as he is capable of at PG National and ended up ranked #94 among PG National Top 100 position players. It is a safe bet that when the '07 rankings are all said and done, that he will be above many of the players ranked above him, but at this showcase he just did not perform to his ability level. At the plate Shepherd has easy to see strength. He is a good opposite field hitter and has power to all fields. He produces his power with a short swing and gets the barrel to the ball quite well and consistently. With that type of swing Shepherd will hit for both power and average and fit well in the middle of a line-up. His hands work really well and his bat head has life through the hitting zone. It is entirely conceivable to imagine him putting up huge numbers this spring in high school and moving steadily up draft lists. In the field he showed that he has good hands and an above average arm. All Shepherd's tools fit the 3rd base position quite well, including the power. He is a big, physical young player with explosive abilities and good athleticsm. Shepherd ran 4.27 home/1st with a 6.92 60 time and both times are very impressive given his build. Shepherd is verbally committed to Texas and based solely on his ability, should have significant scout attention this fall.

Shepherd is a young looking 2007 infield prospect who also shows some ability as a pitcher. He’s a solidly built 5-10, 175 lbs. Shepherd has good speed and quickness and ran the 60 in 7.17 while throwing 77 mph during infield drills. He hits from a slightly open stance with high hands and a line drive swing plane. Shepherd doesn’t get much rhythm or help from his lower half, which limits his power potential and ability to drive the ball at present. Shepherd also threw a couple innings in relief. He was 77-79 mph on his fastball with a full arm circle and good command from a ¾’s release point. Shepherd’s 66 mph curveball had some sharpness and tight spin to it as well. At his age he should continue developing as a pitcher as well as a position prospect.

Shepherd is a young sophomore infielder from Texas with good present strength, especially in his hands and upper body. He’s the type of defensive player who can play all over the field and showed a willingness to do so during the showcase games but we think his best position right now is third base. Shepherd’s arm strength plays well at third and he works through the ball better than he did in the middle infield. At the plate, Shepherd hits from a no load, no stride approach with high hands and a high extended finish at the end of his swing. He showed that he could be quick to the ball with his hands and make solid contact against live pitching. It looks like from his approach that he has taken lots of batting practice and worked hard on his swing but we’d still like to see some more rhythm to the ball from him. Shepherd also took a turn on the mound and showed good arm strength for a sophomore, topping out at 81 mph on his fastball with a 68 mph sweeping curveball. Overall, Shepherd is a projectable athlete with a great attitude on the field and he should continue to improve. He is a good student as well.
