Abraham Ruiz is a 2008 3B/P with a 6'3'', 205 lb. frame from Pacific Grove, CA who attends Pacific Grove HS. He has a mature low waisted build with excellent present strength. Ruiz is a power hitter who is a legend in Central California for his prodigious and frequent home runs. He hits from a narrow base with a big load and coil in back and explodes to the ball aggressively. Ruiz' timing was off early in the showcase, he was overanxious to show what he could do but he settled in and showed his hitting abilities. He has an easy and fluid swing with very good extension out front. Ruiz had an at bat against LHP Kyle Long throwing 94-96 mph and was on him and battled through an excellent at bat, which showed plenty about Ruiz' hitting ability and approach. Ruiz is light on his feet for a big player and has a good feel for defense at third base and has enough arm strength for the position. We're told that he has really toned down and improved his body life during the last year and keeping at this level of conditioning will be key to his staying at third base. His bat will be his ticket, though, and he has a good one. Ruiz has a verbal commitment to Arizona State.

Abe Ruiz is a 2008 left hand hitting 3rd baseman (1B)/right handed pitcher from Pacific Grove HS, residing in Pacific Grove, CA. Named a Top Prospect at this event. Ruiz has a 6'3" 215 lb. frame with a strong, big, powerful body and a long torso. That long torso gives him a different look and can throw off a scout's perception of his body. In any case, Ruiz is a highly skilled player with both tools and baseball savvy. Offensively he is one of the more physical bats in the '08 class. He has plus present day power and it plays to all fields. He has plus bat speed generated with easy effort. His pullside power comes almost too easily and because he sees the ball so well and early, he can get around the ball a bit too much. The better the velocity, the better a hitter he is. Ruiz makes loud and consistent barrel contact. When he stays patient and trusts his hands, he keeps the barrel in the zone a long time, producing eye popping power to the middle of the diamond. He is the type of hitter that can miss the barrel and still get his knocks. Ruiz is an immediate impact hitter if he ends up in college. Defensively he has soft hands and surprisingly nimble feet, particularly for a big young man. He has very good feel for defense and plays well on the move. His arm is good and tracks well across the diamond with low effort throws. He is a big young player that is a "ballplayer", not a brute. Though his future is as a hitter, Ruiz can pitch. He has a long arm action and good arm speed. He gets to good extension and is quite loose. He repeats his delivery well and has feel for the baseball. Ruiz commanded his 84 mph fastball in and out and had some arm side run. He showed a rolling curveball and spun a nice slider, keeping both of them down in the zone. His change-up is a plus pitch, thrown with excellent hand speed and resulting in good action at the plate. He can pitch with his secondary stuff and held runners well. Ruiz is one of the top power bats in the '08 class and is a top D1/pro prospect. His savvy and feel for the game as a player is what sets him apart from other power hitters.
