2006 California Underclass
Corey Kohnke is a 2007 RHP/OF from J. Serra HS, residing in Dana Point, CA, with a 6'4" 190 lb. frame. Kohnke was named to the top prospect team at the California Underclass Showcase. Has an excellent pitcher's build with long arms and broad shoulders. He is rangy and lean. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot with a long arm stroke. Kohnke has a good arm and has some pitchability. There was a little life on his 83-85 mph FB and he was effective at working in and out with the FB. He also showed off a 75-77 mph SL that had lateral plane and decent action. Kohnke's third pitch was a good split finger FB in the 73-77 mph range. That pitch had life down in the zone, particularly when he got to extension. His arm works well and he pitched with decent aggressiveness. There is a need for him to develop a bit more front side leverage. At the plate Kohnke has a chance to hit. He got his arms to good extension and createed some leverage in his swing. He looked like he wanted to lift the ball and he does have some power, though his future power is better than at present. His swing made a long sweep through the zone. He started with a high back elbow and made an aggressive move into the hitting zone. One defense he got good carry on the ball and made a good approach and set-up to the ball. He was pretty accurate with that good arm. Kohnke is a potential two-way for small D1 programs and a legitimate pitching prospect for most major and mid-major D1s. His ceiling on the mound is pretty high.
