Charles Matthews is a 2006 RHP/1B from Athens Academy in Athens, Georgia, with a strong 6'5'', 205 lb. frame. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with very unique mechanics. He compacts his body to throw which causes him to be inconsistent with his release point. He has a loose arm with good arm speed. Matthews has a heavy sinking fastball that topped out at 83 mph with running action as well. He throws many ground balls and keeps the ball down to be successful. With his arm action and build, we project that he will throw harder in the near future. He also mixes in a 70 mph curveball with 9 to 3 break. At the plate he is a right handed hitter with power potential. He gets great leverage at contact and has a good path to the ball. Matthews also has good speed for his size, and is an excellent student. Good upside.
