Ian Tomkins is a 2007 right hand hitting catcher from Loyola Academy, residing in Wilmette, IL. He looks great in a uniform, with a long and athletic build on what is characterized as a plus 6'3" 195 lb. frame. Tomkins has an intriguing tool set and it may just be a matter of time before it all comes together for him. At the plate he hits from a square stance and maintained good balance during his swing. Tomkins has hands that work well in his swing, which has a flat plane. For the most part he employed a pull side approach. With good bat speed and good hands, Tomkins has some projectable power potential. The more reps he gets, particularly with wood bats, the better he will be. As a catcher he showed raw arm strength that is approaching average while showing solid average catch/throw skils in the workout. His feet work patiently and Tomkins also took his time with the exchange from glove to hand. It looks as though he may have switched full time to catcher in the last year or two, so give his defensive skills another couple of years to develop. He is a decent athlete and should develop quite nicely, with the bat and behind the plate. He is a good college prospect and with the right coaching and player development, he has a chance to play some pro ball after college. Tomkins ran 4.59 home/1st and a 7.28 60.
