Will Matthews is a 2007 RHP/3B/1B with a 6'3'', 175 lb. frame from Maitland FL, who attends Trinity Prep. He has a tall lanky body that is beginning to add strength. Matthews throws out of a closed, tall delivery to start and gets good drive to the plate with his lower half. He throws a bit cross bodied on release. Matthews fastball was 77-80 mph with good late running action. His best pitch was a 66 mph curveball that had good 2 plane break and that he did a good job of commanding. Matthews often used his curveball early in the count to set up his fastball later and got a number of hitters looking. He also threw a few 65 mph change ups that had some deception. Matthews is very projectable and does lots of good things on the mound now. He just needs to add some velocity to take it to the next level. Matthews also showed some college level hitting tools that could develop. He hits from a wide stance and has very good bat speed with a smooth, upper cut swing. Matthews showed that he could turn on the ball with power and there is more to come. Watch him both ways if he gets stronger. Wilson is also a very good student.
