Tommy Cheek is a 2009 SS/P with a 5'11'', 172 lb. frame from Escondido, CA who attends Cathedral Catholic HS. He has a strong, compact athletic build and is well built for baseball. Cheek's brightest future appears to be on the mound though he should continue to be followed as a position player too. He has a quick arm that works from an over the top slot and has a short backside arm stroke. His delivery has rhythm and he can repeat it. Cheek's fastball registered 83-85 mph and should climb into the mid-upper-80s soon. His best pitch is a tight breaking ball that has hard break. It is potentially a plus pitch. Cheek also showed a nice changeup. Overall he showed feel of three quality pitches and has some presence on the mound. It was actually his first outing on the mound in a long time and he looked he had barely missed a beat. Offensively Cheek is also good. He has some bat speed and made consistent barrel contact. His arm plays in the infield though his range will limit him to 2nd or 3rd base. He has good hands and plays hard. Cheek is an outstanding student and a talented young player who should have no shortage of D1 opportunities.

Tommy Cheek is a 2009 right handed pitcher from Cathedral Catholic HS, residing in Escondido, CA. He was named a Top Prospect at this event. Cheek has a 5'11" 160 lb. frame and a lithe, lean body that is still developing, but does have liveliness. We have reports of Cheek also being a very good infielder but only saw him pitch in this event. He showed enough to consider him a very quality D1 pitching prospect. Cheek has a loose and quick arm. He creates good leverage with deep backside extension and his ability to take his time over the rubber. His arm action is very good and projects well for future velocity gains. Not only is his arm action good, but he has rhythm in his delivery. Cheek is fun to watch on the mound because it is not hard to imagine how good his stuff will be in a year or two. His stuff can jump on hitters. Cheek's fastball topped at 85 mph and with more physicallity, there is plenty more in there. He pitched to both sides well and has late life on the heater. His curveball is a put-away pitch. It has tight spin and late, hard two-plane action. His change-up looked like it may have been a splitter. Cheek trusts his fastball, which makes his breaking ball that much better. He has a good arm and good mound presence. When his body starts to mature, his stuff could explode. Cheek is a strong D1 prospect and could garner pro attention by the spring of '09.

Tommy Cheek is a 2009 IF/P with a 5'11'', 160 lb. frame from Escondido, CA, who attends Cathedral Catholic HS. Medium frame with wiry strength and projection. Cheek was one of the best under class players at the event. He does everything well and he has good speed, arm strength, and can swing the bat. Defensively he comes and gets the ball well with good actions, and has arm strength and accuracy on his throws. At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance and gets up on the plate. Cheeks gets the bat through the zone well with good bat speed and stays balanced throughout. He has quick hands and makes consistent line drive contact to all fields. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a quick arm and good arm action. Cheek throws with some effort, but his fastball topped out at 84 mph, while working from 82-84. Mixes in a hard overhand curveball at 73 mph, and he showed feel for a changeup at 71 mph. Cheek does everything well and is a player. He is a must follow, and is an excellent student as well.
