Nicholas Carrillo is a 2008 3B/P/1B with a 6'2'', 215 lb. frame from Glendale, AZ who attends Sandra Day O'Connor HS. He has a big and strong body that is a bit on the soft side at the moment. Carrillo was hit by a line drive in the face early in the high school season this spring and is still feeling the effects of that injury and one area is in his conditioning. Carrillo has a pull/power approach at the plate and the bat speed and strength to pull it off. He tends to commit early to pitches and get his hips open and out front early and is hunting pitches on the inside half that he can drive. He has some lift and upper cut in his swing plane and can hit the ball a long way. He may not hit for a high average at the next level put his power will always be a big threat. Defensively, Carrillo has very good arm strength and soft hands at third base. His extra weight has affected his mobility and he'll potentially have to move over to first base in the future. Carrillo has prospect ability on the mound, too. He has thrown 90 mph frequently in the past with a loose and free arm action. He was 84-87 mph in Cincinnati with a slider that showed some sharpness at 75 mph. Carrillo is a good student who has a verbal comittment to Gonzaga.

Nicholas Carrillo is a 2008 left hand hitting catcher/infielder/right handed pitcher from Sandra Day O'Connor HS, residing in Glendale, AZ. He has a 6'1" 200 lb. frame and a thick, strong, broad body that still should be able to hold more strength and size. He was on the verge of being named a top prospect at this event and certainly would have if he had pitched. We saw him in Arizona in the fall and he is a high level power pitcher, but did not pitch in this showcase. As a position player he is also a prospect, with tools that grade out well, particularly as a catcher. Offensively he has very good bat speed and good raw power. He works to stay behind the ball and to stay inside of it. There is some rhythm in his hitting approach and stroke. Carrillo is particularly strong to the pullside but he also did a nice job of hitting the ball up the middle. He is a middle of the order, run producing, RBI type of hitter. Defensively it needs to be noted that he calls a very good game and understands pitch sequencing. His arm is strong and he has a chance to be an above average catch/throw backstop. Carrillo showed good effort to block balls in the dirt and generally does a lot right behind the plate, with a lot of coachable raw ability that could allow him to devlop into a very good defensive catcher. He is a strong D1 prospect with the bat and as a catcher, particularly as a left handed power hitting prospect. However, after seeing him on the mound in the fall, his brightest future is on the mound (loose arm, aggressive, power body, easy upper 80s and a dirty dirty slider).

Nicholas Carrillo is a 2008 SS/3B/P with a 6'1'', 200 lb. frame from Glendale, AZ, who attends Sandra Day O'Connor HS. Large frame with a strong build. Carrillo was one of the base underclass players at the event. Defensively he has a strong arm and showed the ability to make the play form the hole. Carrillo also shows good hands with solid footwork. Also plays numerous positions with ease. At the plate he is a left handed hitter with a good approach. He attacks the ball with a quick line drive swing and he hits the ball hard. Carrillo has projectable power and hit one ball 94 mph off the bat right back up the middle. On the mound he throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a long arm action. Uses a slow and deliberate delivery with good balance. He is an aggressive pitcher who will throw inside with his fastball that topped out at 86 mph. Also throws a hard breaking ball at 75 mph, and a changeup at 72 mph. He mixes his pitches well. Overall he is very athletic for a guy his size, and plays with energy. He is a fun player to watch, and is a good student as well.
