Nikolas Balog is a 2008 1B/P with a 6'3'', 205 lb. frame from Saratoga CA, who attends Archbishop Mitty HS. He passes the eye test with his long, broad, strong body and he still has room to fill out. Balog has some upside as a hitter and on the mound. His hands work well and his wrists are loose. He has a line drive swing plane and showed good power potential, with a pullside approach. Balog has good bat speed and at times can be physical with the bat. He ran the bases well too. The more reps he gets and the more he sees good pitching, the better he will get. Defensively his hands are an asset around the bag. He picked balls well and smoothly handled ground balls. His feet work, he threw accurately, and showed some arm strength. On the mound the ball comes out of his hand easily from a hi 3/4 slot. His delivery is smooth and his fastball is sneaky, topping at 82. Balog can start bats with his curveball and get to the bottom of the zone with it. He is interesting and D1 programs would do well to check back in on him in the summer of 2007.

Nikolas Balog is a 2008 left hand hitting 1st baseman/left handed pitcher from Archbishop Mitty HS, residing in Saratoga, CA. He has a 6'3" 200 lb. frame and a broad, long, strong body that still has room to fill out. Balog is an interesting prospect, both as a position player and as a pitcher. Offensively he is aggressive and showed some raw power. The ball exits his bat well and he has strong hands. There is some lift in his swing that should allow him to develop loft type power as he develops. His barrel is in the zone pretty well. Balog is still developing feel for hitting but flashes very interesting power potential. Defensively he has a good arm, with hands and feet that work well around the bag. In all aspects he is a quality defensive 1st baseman and should continue to get better. On the mound Balog's arm stroke is long and clean. He has a patient delivery that unfolds on-time. He uses his lower half pretty well which should allow him to maximize frontside extension in time. His fastball topped at 81 mph and had good run. His curveball was big with good spin and rolling action. Balog's best pitch was his change-up. He threw that pitch with feel and coaxed above average movement out of it, with some fade and diving action. Perhaps it was a split or forkball. Whatever it was, it was particularly effective against RH hitters. Consider Balog a good D1 follow who could be a two-way prospect for some programs. At this point it looks like his bat has the most potential for future impact.
