Kirkland has been to just about every PG/WWBA event during the last year and he just keeps getting better and better as he gets stronger and shortens his actions. Of course, when you first think of Kirkland, you think of arm strength. He recorded what is believed to be an all time best Perfect Game pop time of 1.72 and threw in a 1.75 and 1.78 just to prove that the first time wasn’t too exceptional for him. Kirkland’s arm grades out as a 70 on the Major League scale and his throws are consistently right on the bag. His receiving skills are very solid and he’s a student of the game behind the plate. Kirkland’s swing can be long at times. He’s also hit more than his share of doubles. Kirkland feasts on pitches that can get his hands extended to and shows above average power potential to right centerfield in both batting practice and games. He’s an excellent student who has signed to go to Alabama. If he shows a strong bat this spring he could be an early pick in June. Not many, if any are better defensively.

Kirkland had the strongest arm at the event, both off the mound and in the field. He was conistently in the low 1.90’s during the workouts on a slick turf field and received the ball well during game competition. Off the mound, Kirkland threw 86-89 mph, with many 89’s, during two innings of work. His future is clearly behind the plate, though he can't be ignored on the hill. The aspect of Kirkland’s game that has really grown this summer, though, is his ability to drive the ball deep into the alley’s. He took an excellent BP in Chapel and continued to hit the ball in game action, driving three balls up the alley or off a wall for doubles. Continued work on his hitting and shifting ability behind the plate will place Kirkland among the elite catchers in the country for next years draft. Chris is also an excellent student.

Kirkland was a revelation in Lincoln and has put himself among the elite prospect catchers in the country, especially defensively. He’s a long limbed athlete with a young face and plenty of frame to put muscles on. In fact, Kirkland has lost 40 pounds over the past 12 months and has just started to work on replacing the lost baggage with muscle. Kirkland’s raw arm strength rates with anyone in the country. He’s a bit frenetic on his release while unraveling his 6-3 arms and legs, but had one pop time at 1.78 and was consistently within .10-.15 of that with the rest of his throws. Kirkland received the ball well in games and was comfortable behind the plate. Between his weight loss and a broken hand he suffered this spring, Kirkland’s bat is behind his defense at this point. He made consistent contact and manipulated the bat head well, but didn’t have the strength to drive the ball with wood. With his projectable body, this should only be a matter of time and hard work. He also threw 90 from the mound and with his size and arm action you can't help but think about the mound. This is a big time arm! Chris is a top level student and should be recruited very heavily by the national power programs.

Big strong catcher with a big hose and some quickness. Good defensive catcher who can receive, block and especially throw. Also pitched in the mid 80s with a hard biting breaking ball. Quiet hitting approach and big time line drive power potential to all fields.
