Derek Thackston is a 2008 RHP/OF with a 6'0'', 180 lb. frame from Wilmington, NC who attends Hoggard HS. He has a medium build with square shoulders and some present strength. Thackston has a multipart delivery, with arms and legs extending and kicking out all through his delivery, but his arm arch stays pretty compact and consistent. Much of the energy and action in his delivery is wasted and could be done away with. Thackston's arm is quick and works well and his fastball topped out at 86 mph. He showed the ability to both ride his fastball up and in and sink it away. Thackston shortens his arm arch on his curveball and ends up casting it up there at a soft 64-66 mph with soft spin. He didn't throw a change up. He will either need to make adjustments on his curveball or work on a slider. Thackston has some arm strength to work with and develop. He is a very good student.
