Johnson is a slender left handed hitting catcher from Florida with a good balance of tools. He has some wiry strength in his frame and the chance to get better as he gets stronger. Johnson hits out of a wide, crouched stance at the plate with a rotational swing. When he gets his hips through he generates good bat speed and hits the ball hard to the middle of the field. Johnson showed a selective strike zone in the games but had the ability to aggressively attack the strikes he wanted. Defensively, Johnson impressed us with his quickness and blocking ability. He really does a good job keeping balls in front of him. He had solid arm strength at 75 mph but his quickness resulted in low 1.90 area pop times. Johnson’s defensive skills definitely play at the next level. He’s a very good student as well.

Cory Johnson -- Johnson is a medium built left handed hitting sophomore catcher from Florida with some projectability to his body. He hits from a wide, balanced stance and has good bat speed for his age and size. Johnson hit better in games than he did in batting practice. If he gets stronger, his swing fundamentals already in place are going to make him a very good hitter. Johnson has good body life for a catcher and turned in a couple of solid running times to first base, making his 60 time look irrelevant. Johnson threw well in game situations and is going to lower his pop times with experience and strength, too. This is a well rounded young catcher who is going to keep getting better as he gets older. Cory is a good student.
