Alex Hilliard is a 2006 shortstop/second baseman from Lafayette, LA with a good athletic body at 6-2, 180 lbs. He has easy, smooth actions in all areas and glides as a runner. Hilliard ran the 60 in 6.57 and was 4.37 to first base. He showed nice instincts on the bases using his speed. Hilliard has been playing the infield for only a little over a year and has shown tremendous improvement. He stays low through the ball and fields the ball cleanly and made strong throws. He looked very comfortable at second base and made the routine plays at shortstop. His speed and arm strength make him an obvious centerfield candidate if the middle infield doesn't work out. Offensively, Hilliard has good bat speed and shows gap to gap power. He'll hit the ball to all fields and got everyone's attention with a rocket to left centerfield that hopped over the 390' sign for a ground rule double at Turner Field. Overall, Hilliard is a plus athlete who's baseball skills are just starting to come together. He is also an excellent student who is a nationally recognized musician. Hilliard has signed with Vanderbilt.

Hilliard is a 6-2 infielder from Louisiana who was one of the top pure athletes at the showcase. He has a lean greyhound body with present strength and a multitude of quick twitch muscles. Hilliard has well above average speed in the 60 at 6.62 and shows the same type of quickness on the bases. At the plate, Hilliard hits from a balanced stance with good rhythm through the ball and excellent raw bat speed. He showed us the ability to hit the ball hard all over the field and with his swing plane and speed should be a prolific doubles/triples type of hitter in the future. Hilliard is not as advanced defensively as offensively and has played relatively little middle infield. His arm strength is solid but his footwork and hands still are in the development stage. He should keep working hard at his infield skills but centerfield is always an obvious alternative in the future. Another thing worth mentioning is a comment one of our more experienced scouts, a former professional player, made in his notes "Hilliard carries himself like a ball player". Hilliard is an excellent student as well. Sky is the limit.

Alex Hilliard -- Hilliard lists himself as a primary pitcher but based on his performance in Ft Myers, we’d like to respectfully disagree and encourage him to work on his position/hitting skills more. Hilliard is a sophomore with a very projectable and athletic 6-1, 170 lb. frame. He’s an above average big league runner in the 60 right now on a hard track, ran 4.29 to first base and his actions back that up. Hilliard’s bat speed was solid for a slender kid who just turned 16 and he showed easy, smooth actions in infield workouts. Hilliard only threw 73 mph off the mound for 3 innings with mediocre mechanics, which backs up our thoughts. Alex is a very good student, too. He might end up being a pitcher, but he is so athletic he needs to be followed closely as a position player.
