Derek Dietrich is a 2007 SS/3B/P with a 6'2'', 185 lb. frame from Parma, OH who attends St. Ignatius HS. Derek has a strong athletic build and is one of the top prospects in the class for 2008. He could be an early draft pick or an immediate two-way contributor for a highest-level college program. At the plate Derek has tremendous bat speed and raw power potential. His offensive upside is huge and he has all the tools you look for in a hitter. In the infield Derek has outstanding infield actions and project as an MLB third baseman eventually. His arm strength (94) is well above the major league average. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot on the mound with a short loose arm action. His arm is electic on the mound and if he weren't such a good IF prospect he would have a big future on the mound. He has an effortless delivery and the ball really jumps on hitters. Derek is a strong student that should attract the attention of many major league teams this spring.

Derek Dietrich is a 2007 shortstop/right hand pitcher from St. Ignatius HS, residing in Parma, OH. Dietriech has a srong, lean, athletic build on his well-proportioned 6'1" 190 lb. frame. There were numerous times that Dietriech made the entire crowd stop conversation and take notice of him and he was ultimately ranked #20 among PG National Top 100 position players and earned a selection to the Aflac All-American Classic. Dietriech wowed the crowd of scouts and coaches during BP, with his arm and playmaking ability, and also drew attention with the old-school stirrups and style of play. He is a gamer with tremendous ability and a clear love of playing the game. He not only has plus tools, but he is vocal and even in an individual event it was very easy to see Dietriech's leadership skills and his passion for the game and his teammates. He snuck in two BP sessions and the second one was a show-stopper. Dietriech has plus bat speed and a very easy swing. He creates plus plus spin off the bat and the ball has tremendous carry. His raw power rates as plus and it does not come out because of brute strength or an ability to overpower a ball. It comes out because has plus acceleration through contact and that spin he creates off the bat. He hit several tape measure shots and sort of looked like he was in a groove like Bobby Abreu was in during the 2005 home run derby. Dietriech has a very relaxed set-up and hands that work well. His power to the pull side is so easy but he also has good juice the other wasy. He is still developing a consistent timing mechanism during game situations. There are times when he can struggle with the bat, but his tools are going to play and play for a long time. In the field he is a big shortstop but he can stay there. There is nothing flashy or actions oriented about Dietriech on defense. He simply goes to the ball, catches it and fires lasers across the diamond. He is a playmaker and a gamer. That big time arm is also accurate, rare for young players. His release is not always the quickest but his raw arm strength makes up for it on plays to the backhand or with a plus runner going down the line. Dietriech ran 4.30 home/1st, and posted a 7.20 60 yard time, though he has been timed below 7.10 on numerous occasions. On the mound Dietriech has plus sink on his 89-92 mph fastball and a plus 75-76 mph 12/6ish hammer curveball. He has that high energy that suggests he would be a dominant closer and the stuff to match. There are an awful lot of plus abilities with Dietriech and he seems to have that extra something called love of the game that many players today just do not look like they have. He is an impact D1 prospect and a top round talent. With a big spring, he could vault into the very early rounds.
