Smith is an "04" RHP/3B from Indiana. At 6'3/215 he's a big strong athlete. He even runs fairly well. He has a good arm, but really didn't show it off during infield workouts. He showed serious bat speed and power potential at the plate, but he needs to work on his swing mechanics. His future lies on the hill. He threw low/mid 80s with lots of sink on his heater. His curveball rotates nice in the mid 60s. He threw a 70 mph change up. He also threw a splitty in the low 70s that looked very good at times. He gets good leverage and his arm works much better on the mound than as an infielder. Derek is a very good student.
