Butler is a base hit machine with the ability to smoke the ball to the middle of the field against all types of pitching. He has above average hand strength and hits the ball deep in the zone, even on 90+ mph fastballs. Butler is going to be a very high average hitter at the next level, especially if he’s swinging the metal bat. He even showed some loft power during batting practice with the wood. While Butler isn’t going to win any defensive awards, he has noticeably improved his skills at third base during the past year. His arm strength is at least a half grade better than it was and his hands are getting softer and more sure every time out. Butler is a 7.4 runner but his first step quickness is better than that. The bat is his top tool and it will play real big at South Florida If he ends up there.

Butler didn’t hit the ball as hard as he did at the Perfect Game National in Lincoln in mid-June, but all things considered, that would have been a tall accomplishment (Butler went 7-8 in game competition in Lincoln). He did show his strength and bat speed on a number of times though and we wouldn’t hesitate to recommend his offensive game to anyone. Butler’s best defensive tool are his sure hands and his smooth exchange and release. He played a solid third base in Chapel Hill but asking him to play second base might be stretch unless he significantly improves his range and footwork. His bat will play at any college in America. In fact, his bat could create some serious draft interest. Dexter is a good student.

Dexter Butler was the top hitter in Lincoln. He is adaquate defensively, but doesn't run exceptionally well. He does show a pretty good arm. It's his bat that should create major interest from top level DI schools and pro scouts. He can hit and he proved it in Lincoln going 6 for 7 against some of the top pitchers in the country. The ball jumps off his bat in a hurry and he shows excellent power potential with the wood. He's quiet in the box and flat attacks the ball while staying under control and well balanced. There might have been better overall prospects at the PG National, but no one hit the ball like Dexter. In fact, we don't ever remember a hitter going 6 for 7 at one of the big PG events. The bat might take him all the way! Dexter is a good student.
