LATEST PG SHOWCASE REPORT
2004 Spring Top Prospect Showcase
C/RHP Drew Laidig: Laidig is a skilled junior catcher with some very nice tools for the college level. Laidig isn’t the biggest prospect on the field at 5-9 but has very good quickness both behind the plate and on the bases and could definitely play some positions out in the field well, such as middle infield or centerfield. Laidig’s arm strength is solid; his throws down to second base have good carry and accuracy. Laidig topped out at 86 mph off the mound at the Spring showcase, too. Defensively, Laidig handled his team’s high velocity pitchers such as Jeremy Hellickson and Travis Sweet with ease. He generates some bat speed with wood and has a very aggressive approach at the plate. He was especially impressive at the Spring Showcase and lined several hits off good pitching. We saw in games earlier in the spring that sometimes his aggressiveness is an asset when Laidig gets a fastball on the first pitch or two and he drives it to the center of the field, but sometimes it works against him when offers at a poor pitch early in the count. His hand/eye skills are well above average and Laidig rarely swings and misses, so these early count swings can help him or hurt him. He can play!
