2007 Hawaii Showcase Tournament
Kai Higa is a 2007 C/OF with a 5'11'', 165 lb. frame from Kaneohe HI, who attends Damien Memorial HS. He has an average size frame and a wiry strong build. Higa has a profile that can draw attention from college baseball coaches; left-hand hitting catcher. Not only does he hit from the left side, but Higa runs well for a catcher and is still getting developing in all phases of the game. He is a line-drive hitter and consistently hits the ball up the middle and to the opposite field. He has some feel with the bat and has a fluid swing, with a quiet approach to the baseball. Good bat control too. Higa could actually hit in the two-hole as a catcher. Defensively he showed quick, good feet. His exchange works well, though his arm stroke is a little long. If he can shorten his backside arm action, Higa has a chance to be a solid catch/throw catcher at the college level. With his feet and transfer, as well as his athleticism, he should be a really coachable prospect beyond high school. Two more years at the JC level might be best for Higa, not only as a college prospect, perhaps as a professional prospect.
