Seth Mahaffrey is a 2009 MIF/P with a 5'11'', 160 lb. frame from Winston-Salem, NC who attends Parkland HS. He has a long, levered frame and looks bigger and taller than he's listed as. Mahaffey ran the 60 in 7.68 and threw 75 during infield drills. He played both infield and outfield during the games and looked much more comfortable in the outfield, moving to the ball well and making strong throws. Offensively Mahaffey has busy hands in his load and starts his swing low. He has good hand strength and generates some bat speed that resulted in solid line drive contact in games. He'll occasionally get his front foot down late and his timing will be effected but Mahaffey's approach worked for him and he has some hitting tools. Mahaffey took a turn on the mound and had a deceptive throwing style with release points all over the compass from high 3/4's to side arm. His best and livest stuff was from low 3/4's. He got nice runnng life on a 77-78 mph fastball and a big sweeping break on a 71 mph slider. He shows good feel for pitching and could develop a bit if he sticks to the lower arm angles. Mahaffey is also a good student.
