2005 National Underclass Dec 28-30
Jeffrey Hawkins is a 2008 3B/P/1B from Vanguard HS in Ocala, FL, with a 6'4'', 230 lb. frame. He has an exceptionally big and strong build for a sophomore but retains plenty of quickness and athleticism. Hawkins ran the 60 in 7.31 and showed the ability and willingness to take an extra base during games. He showed some arm strength at third base and soft hands but likely profiles at first base in the future. Hawkins hits out of a closed to open approach with a big hand hitch trigger. He generates very good bat speed with an aggressive, upper cut swing that promises big time power in the future. The ball comes off his bat hard on contact. Like most big power hitters Hawkins swing will get long and he will reach for breaking balls but he shows some bat head skills. There's no reason he shouldn't continue to develop into a dangerous hitter with more repetitions and experience. Hawkins also pitched and showed prospect ability from the mound as well. He throws from a high 3/4's release point and a clean on line delivery with some effort on release. His arm stoke is short and powerful and he has a good downhill angle to the plate. Hawkins fastball topped out at 84 mph and his 72 mph curveball showed hard biting action at times. He should definitely be followed as a pitching prospect as well as a power hitter. Hawkins is a good student as well.
