SCOUTING PROFILE: Bundy has been on the prospect map since he was an Oklahoma high-school freshman, when threw up to 92 mph at the 2008 Area Code Games. He has steadily improved since and is now the consensus pick to be the first high-school pitcher drafted in June. Some veteran Midwest scouts have even expressed the opinion this spring that Bundy is the best young arm they have ever scouted, and say he could conceivably have been a consideration for the first overall pick in a year with less elite-level talent than 2011. Bundy has been consistently dominating this spring for Owasso High, one of the nation’s top prep programs, topping out at 98 mph. Through April 17, he had a string of eight consecutive complete-game victories, including one on a very heavily-scouted school trip to Florida. His 8-0 record included a no-hitter and six one-hitters, along with 111 strikeouts in 49 innings. Perfect Game scouts Ben Collman and Todd Gold took in his latest win, after initially venturing to Oklahoma a day earlier to take in a highly-publicized showdown between Bundy and Broken Arrow righthander Archie Bradley, also a projected first-rounder in June. That contest was rained out, but they stayed on an extra day and watched Bundy dismantle Edmond North, the state’s No. 2-ranked 6-A team, 10-0, in his latest one-hitter of the season. He pitched consistently between 94 and 97 mph, and threw an incredible 82 percent of his fastballs for strikes (April 16 Game Report). That combination of command and raw stuff is key to why Bundy’s relatively-short and mature build doesn’t seem to be even a passing concern to scouts, who often prefer their top high-school pitching prospects to be more physically projectable. The bottom line is that Bundy simply doesn’t need to get any better in the ways that classic projectability would impact a normal pitcher’s future. At various times, Bundy throws five different pitches for strikes—a cutter, changeup, slider and curveball, in addition to his mid-90s fastball. He does an outstanding job of repeating his delivery. If Bundy stays healthy—and he has never had an issue in that area—there is no reason that he can’t take an exceptionally quick path to the major leagues for a high-school pitcher. Given his choice, the switch-hitting Bundy would probably prefer to be selected by a National League team as his athleticism and hitting ability would be assets in that league. A potentially-interesting draft scenario involves the Baltimore Orioles, who have the No. 4 pick overall. Bundy’s older brother, Bobby, also a righthander, was the O’s eighth-round draft choice in 2008 and probably would have gone much higher if he hadn’t torn the ACL in his knee during his senior basketball season. The elder Bundy is currently starting at Frederick of the High Class A Carolina League. However it all plays out, Bundy should expect to have his name called within the first 10 picks on June 6.
Projected Draft Position: First round / top 10 picks.
