2/14/12: There are seven outfielders ranked by Perfect Game among the top 20 prospects in the 2012 high school class. This is one of the top groups of high school outfielders since the renowned 2005 class that saw Justin Upton, Andrew McCutchen, Cameron Maybin, Jay Bruce and Colby Rasmus picked in the first round. Of those seven, David Dahl probably has the best combination of tools and present skills across the board, although he doesn’t really rank first in any single category. Despite running a 6.49 at the Perfect Game National, Dahl’s speed ranks behind Byron Buxton and Lewis Brinson among the outfielders. Dahl does have an advantage on those two being a left handed hitter and having an extra step or two towards first base on ground balls as he is regularly in the 4.0 to 4.1 range from home to first. Dahl doesn’t have a pure power stroke at the plate but has the bat speed and strength in his 6-2/190 frame to drive the ball out of the park and will put up well above average numbers of doubles and triples immediately at the next level. But Courtney Hawkins, Jesse Winker and Nick Williams will all grade out with more power potential among the top outfield prospects. Dahl’s defensive tools and skills in the outfield will rank him right near the top of any prospect list, right along with Buxton, and he projects to be able to play centerfield at the highest levels of the game. His 95 mph arm strength from the outfield is a big weapon. As far as Dahl’s present game skills go, he is a polished player who has performed extremely well over the past year at national level events but did not have much of a resume with scouts prior to last June. In fact, he had logged more time as a right handed pitcher at WWBA events prior to last summer than as an outfielder and threw 89-91 mph as a sophomore. Albert Almora or Winker would rank higher in terms of present game skills and performance. But add up all those different parts of the game: Speed, power, hitting ability, defensive tools, performance ability, and Dahl ranks in the upper half among top prospect outfielders in every category. In addition, if there was a confidence category for what scouts think the chances are of a player fulfilling his physical potential, Dahl (and Almora) would rank near the top of that category as well. The best Major League comparison for Dahl may be former Gold Glove and All-Star centerfielder Steve Finley. The comparison isn’t as tight as it could be as Finley was a left handed thrower and was inexplicably a 13th round senior sign draft in 1987 out of Illinois State instead of a hot high school talent. But Finley started off his career as a speed player (three seasons with 34 or more steals, including a career high of 44) who evolved into a power hitter (four seasons over 30 home runs including a career high 36 at the age of 39) in his 30s. He finished his career with 304 home runs and 320 steals along with over 2500 career hits. Aside from the physical tools and skills that Finley and Dahl share, their swings from the left side are very similar in their basic mechanics and swing plane. That’s the real key to the comparison. They both start from a high hand set and drive down hard through the ball and can drive the ball to the left centerfield gap.
