2/20/12: Cecchini has grown up in almost the perfect environment to become a top baseball prospect. His father, Glenn, is the baseball coach at Barbe High School in Lake Charles, Louisiana, a program that is consistently ranked among the best in the country. His mother, Raissa, is an assistant coach at Barbe and is reputed to be the best female batting practice pitcher in the country. She’s had plenty of practice, as Gavin’s older brother, Garin, is a top prospect with the Red Sox (.298-3-23 in 32 games in the New York-Penn League in 2011) who dropped to the fourth round in 2010 due to a knee injury but was still paid $1.31M to sign. Cecchini first appeared in a Perfect Game event the summer before his freshman year at the 2008 WWBA 17U National Championships, but made his first impression as a skinny 6-foot, 150-pound shortstop on the Southeast Texas Sun Devils team that finished second to the ABD Bulldogs at the September 2009 PG National Championships in Tucson, Arizona. He wasn’t strong enough to drive the ball yet, but squared up high level pitching consistently and made all the plays at shortstop. It was obvious then that only some strength was standing between him and top prospect status. That strength started to kick in over the next eight months and Cecchini had gained about 20 pounds of muscle by the 2010 Sunshine South Showcase in Brenham, Texas and looked like a different player. The ever present question asked about high school shortstop prospects is whether they will be able to play shortstop at the Major League level as they become bigger and stronger and the game gets faster. Scouts have already mentally moved top prospects who presently play shortstop such as Tanner Rahier, C.J. Hinojosa, Addison Russell and Corey Seager, off of shortstop and evaluate them more on their potential as second or third basemen. That’s not the case with Cecchini, however. He is a slender and athletic 6-foot-1, 180-pounds and doesn’t project to get much bigger. While he’s not a true burner as a runner, running the 60 steadily in the 6.7 range, he’s light on his feet and shows plus instincts moving through the ball. His raw arm strength isn’t a true plus either, but plays up due to his quick release and athleticism. Cecchini’s best present big league comparable is probably Orioles shortstop J.J. Hardy, with former big league All-Star Jay Bell being another such player. Hardy is unlikely to ever win a Gold Glove for his defense but he plays well enough on that side of the ball that playing shortstop gives his potent bat even more value. It’s with the bat that Cecchini is likely to make his biggest mark as a professional. He has an outstanding swing honed through countless batting practice swings, and the ball explodes off his bat with authority in a way you wouldn’t expect to see given his frame and overall physicality. Cecchini is the type of hitter who will start off his professional career hitting tons of doubles and triples and will gradually start developing home run power as he gets older, much in the mold of Hardy and Bell. Scouts reserve their greatest compliments for Cecchini’s work ethic and passion for the game, though. That’s not especially surprising, given his upbringing.

Gavin Cecchini is a 2012 MIF with a 6-1 180 lb. frame from Lake Charles, LA who attends Barbe HS. Slender athletic frame, lots of room to add strength. Very polished hitter with present bat speed, patient hitter, recognizes pitches, balanced hitting stance, short and compact to the ball, line drive swing plane, has the strength to drive the gaps now with more to come, consistent hard contact. 6.60 runner smooth defensive actions with range, soft hands, enough arm for shortstop, could play anywhere on the infield. Will keep improving over time, still projects. Good student, verbal commitment to Mississippi.

Simple swing mechanics, quick weight shift, aggressive swing, squares pitches up, good balance, can shorten hand path to ball as he gets stronger. Outstanding field presence, can tell he's from a baseball family. Very good student, verbal commitment to LSU.
