2/16/12: Sims first appeared at a Perfect Game event as more of a primary infielder playing for Team Gwinnett at the 2009 BCS 15U National Championship shortly after his freshman year. He showed very good bat speed and arm strength and looked like a future third base prospect if he didn’t develop as a pitcher first. He threw 86-88 mph at that event and later upped that to 90 mph when he attended his first showcase, the 2009 Southeast Underclass early in his sophomore year. It wasn’t until 2011 that Sims fully established himself as one of the top right handed pitching prospects in the country. His performance in June at the PG National Showcase earned him a spot on the East roster for the PG All-American Classic in San Diego, and Sims built on that through the summer at the WWBA 17U and 18U National Champions for Team Gwinnett in July and at the East Coast Professional Showcase in early August. Sims’ athleticism is a big plus on the mound, as he has a high leg raise delivery that he stays balanced well above the rubber during and a powerful drive to the plate using his strong lower half. He can do a better job of repeating his arm slot, especially on his change up, but it’s a delivery that pitching coaches at the next level will not have to do much tinkering with. Another thing that Sims will not have to work on at the next level is developing a third pitch. He already throws a fastball, curveball and change up and probably throws more change ups than any of his potential first round peers at the high school level. The irony is that his change up is his third best pitch right now, something one senses that Sims is aware of on the mound, but the fact that he works so hard to improve it, even against top level hitters, is something that speaks well for his aptitude as a pitcher and is something that scouts have noticed. Sims fastball sits comfortably at 92-93 mph and he has been as high as 97 mph at the East Coast Pro and 96 mph at WWBA 18U. He gets very good heavy sinking life when he works down in the strike zone and maintains his velocity well. For grading purposes, his best pitch is a 76 mph curveball that gets hard tight spin from his high three-quarters release point and outstanding downer bite at times. Sims isn’t afraid to pitch to contact with his sinking fastball and change up, but his curveball is his go to pitch when he’s looking for a strike out.

Lucas Sims is a 2012 RHP with a 6-2 185 lb. frame from Lawrenceville, GA who attends Brookwood HS. Slender upper half, strong lower half, room to add strength. Big leg raise delivery, high 3/4's release point, some upper body lean, very fast arm coming through. Low 90's fastball, topped at 94 mph, some flat run when down, could work the bottom of the zone more consistently. Curveball best pitch, big size, sharp biting action, same release point as fastball, commands curveball well, buckles some knees. Tends to lower release point on change up, good arm speed and feel, lots of confidence in change and throws plenty of them but it's his 3rd best pitch. Good right handed swing, has some bat speed. Three potential plus pitches and good feel for pitching. Good student, verbal commitment to Clemson. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.
