(3/29/12): Keon Barnum first appeared at Perfect Game events as a 6-foot-4, 185-pound eighth grader playing for the Dawg Pound in the BCS 18U Florida qualifiers in May and June of 2008. Barnum is a year older than most of his peers in the 2012 class and was already 15 at that point, but an eighth grader competing against high school juniors and seniors is noteworthy regardless. He first gained the attention of the national scouting community that summer at the WWBA 18U National Championships, not only hitting clean up for the Dawg Pound, a team organized by former big league outfielder Reggie Williams, but by being a productive eighth grade cleanup hitter. Barnum has matured both physically and as a baseball player since those early days. He now measures in at a firm and muscled 6-foot-5, 225-pounds and is a deceptively good athlete for his size. He regularly runs the 60 in 7.0 to 7.1 seconds, and scouts often play with the idea of his moving to the outfield, which he occasionally has done in the past. Barnum has plus arm strength from any position, and although he has rarely pitched, there are reports of his touching 92-93 mph from the left side off the mound. But when you’re a 6-foot-5, 225-pound left handed hitter that looks like Ryan Howard, all anyone really cares about is your hitting ability. Barnum is the type of hitter who brings the entire ball park to a standstill when he’s taking batting practice or coming to the plate in a game. There is a palpable anticipation that something special might happen. The 2012 class has plenty of great hitters, some almost as big as Barnum, but I’ve noted that Barnum is the only one who has that physical presence to make everyone stop what they’re doing or saying and watch. Plus, the ball comes off Barnum’s wood bat with a sound that every baseball scout recognizes but that few hitters can duplicate. While Barnum’s loose, fast and extended swing produces some titanic batting practice bombs and makes the field look small at times, he has a somewhat different game approach. You don’t see the lift, length and extension as much against live pitching. Barnum has a very mature ability for a big power hitter to let the ball get deep, stay inside the ball and line the ball to the gaps. You rarely see him take the big swing-and-miss cut many similarly talented hitters of all ages will unleash (especially the aforementioned Ryan Howard), but you are likely to see Barnum square up on a 92 mph fastball and line the ball firmly over the shortstop’s head. He’s also a patient hitter who is used to being pitched to backwards and he will sometimes become a bit too patient and watch a mistake pitch in his wheelhouse go by unchallenged. The flip side of this is that scouts rarely get to see Barnum use his huge power in game situations. He hit .491-6-27 (26 walks) as a junior at King High School in Tampa and is hitting .390-3-8 (13 walks) this spring. The big hitters in the 2012 class – Carlos Correa, Jesse Winker, Trey Williams, Nick Williams, Joey Gallo, Albert Almora – all have had their signature events and multiple home run games on the national stage. Barnum has always performed well but hasn’t had that signature event or that one dominating performance that sticks out in scout’s minds and makes them go “wow.” That shouldn’t keep Barnum from being a top two round draft pick and maybe even a top 50 pick come June. Powerful left handed bats on 6-foot-5 athletes just don’t come around that often. That’s why everyone stops and watches Barnum at every opportunity.

Keon Barnum is a 2012 1B/OF with a 6-4 224 lb. frame from Tampa, FL who attends King HS. Bigger than list, physically imposing, extremely strong. Game changing power potential but has present hitting skills, sound game approach, good balance and controlled swing, can go gap to gap and drive outside pitches the other way, not afraid to let the ball get deep, good hand action, polished overall hitting actions. Type of hitter everyone in the park stops to watch when he's hitting. Deceptively good athlete, runs well, good actions at first base, plus arm strength. Ryan Howard type potential. Good student. Named to the Perfect Game All American Classic team.
