2/28/12: The 2012 high school outfield class is outstanding, with at least a dozen different players having a realistic chance of being drafted in the first two rounds. Of those, perhaps the one with the most to prove this spring is Coral Springs (Fla.) High School’s Lewis Brinson. The 6-foot-4, 180-pound right handed hitter simply hasn’t played much outside the state of Florida, especially in team oriented events where scouts could see him compete over a period of multiple days. He has also signed with the University of Florida to play college ball should he not sign professionally this summer. What the scouts have seen, though, has been very impressive. Brinson has a lean, long-limbed greyhound type build and already has some wiry strength that shows when he swings the bat. He has a long, easy running stride in the outfield that allows him to cover huge amounts of ground in centerfield, and was hand timed at 6.60 in the 60 at the East Coast Pro Showcase in Lakeland, Fla. last August. His jumps and routes in centerfield are still on the raw side, but once the ball is in the air Brinson has easy plus range up the alleys. His arm strength isn’t a major weapon but will likely grade out as average on the Major League scale. Some have speculated that Brinson will end up as a corner outfielder but there is no reason based on his tools to think of him as anything but a centerfielder. He doesn’t have the type of body that is going to slow down or fill out as he gets older and his top end speed will easily give him plus range once he learns the nuances of jumps and routes. The positive side of the corner outfield speculation is that scouts can project that Brinson is going to have enough bat to play those positions. Brinson starts his swing with a big leg raise and gets balanced over his back leg, then powers into the ball with a big weight shift and good use of his lower half. He keeps his long arms short to the ball and generates very good raw bat speed, although he will get long to the ball at times, especially on off-speed pitches. He has shown surprising power for a young player with his physical build, especially pulling the ball, and is going to hit home runs as part of his offensive package. Catching up to high velocity fastballs will not be an issue with Brinson based on what he has shown thus far. Brinson hit .473-4-23 in 23 games for Coral Springs last year, scoring 29 runs and going a perfect 11-for-11 on stolen base attempts while being named the District Player of the Year. Interestingly, he walked 16 times as compared to only 8 strikeouts, always a good thing to see in a young hitter. Probably the best comparison for Brinson is to a young Dexter Fowler. Their body types at the same age were extremely similar, with Brinson perhaps having a bit of strength and a few pounds on the Rockies centerfielder. Scouts projected Fowler to develop power as he got stronger, and while that has translated into doubles and triples thus far and not into home runs yet, it gives Brinson another area in which he will likely have an advantage in this comparison. Despite his plus speed, Fowler isn’t a base stealer and his and Brinson’s long legs will probably keep that from happening for either player at the big league level. Also not coincidently, Fowler was ranked No. 12 in the Perfect Game Class of 2004 rankings, whereas Brinson is currently ranked No. 14. Fowler was drafted in the 12th round by the Rockies but was given a $925,000 signing bonus, the equivalent of compensation round money. If the draft were held today, that could be just the type of money slot in the new draft system where Brinson will fall as well.
