LHP Schuyler Tripp (Drakesville, IA): Tripp is a projectable 6-1, 165 lb southpaw from Iowa. As he has all spring, he threw 86-88 on his fastball with very good tailing action from a mid-3/4’s release point. Tripp unleashed a very impressive 77 mph change up at the Pre-Draft we hadn’t seen before and picked up a few strikeouts with it. His 66-69 mph curveball wasn’t quite as sharp as we saw recently but left handed hitters hate its size and deception. Big time sleeper! DNF for sure maybe even sign.

Tripp is a slender 6-1, 165 lb left handed pitcher from Iowa. We’ve been watching him throw for a couple of years and this showcase was easily the best we’ve seen him. Tripp was very steady at 86-88 mph for 3 innings. He throws from a mid ¾’s release point and gets good running action on his fastball away from right handed hitters. When he’s keeping his fastball low it’s a very hard pitch to do anything with. Tripp’s curveball was 67-70 and very big and sharp. Left handed hitters really struggle to stay in the box against this pitch and Tripp likes throwing it inside and intimidating hitters. Tripp’s delivery is still a bit raw, especially in opening early, which sometimes affects his command, but not in this performance. He can also definitely gain some strength. You can see Tripp ending up as a low 90’s southpaw without much trouble at all. Tripp has committed to Indian Hills CC so he’s at worst a very good draft and follow for some professional team.

LHP Schuyler Tripp: Tripp is a young, thin junior left hander from Iowa with a loose and quick left arm. We’ve seen him frequently this Spring during the league games and it was gratifying that he’s kept improving each start and was at his best during the Showcase. He’s very projectable and is just going to keep getting better in the future. Tripp’s fastball topped out at 86 mph at the Showcase, his best velocity of the Spring, and he threw plenty of 84’s as well with good tailing action. Tripp has a tendency to throw his breaking ball in the low to mid 60’s and while this pitch has good spin and a big break to it, it doesn’t have the power you want to see in a curveball. We were very pleased to see Tripp throw some low 70’s curveballs at the Showcase that we hadn’t seen before. He also throws a 76 mph change up that shows promise of being a good third pitch for him. Tripp’s demeanor on the mound is very serious and he’s one of the fastest workers you’ll ever see. Projects in a big way, keep an eye on this lefty.

Schuyler Tripp: Tripp is a very slim and wiry 6-2 junior left hander from Iowa with good natural arm strength. He throws from a deceptive low ¾’s release point with a short arm stroke that generates good running and sinking action on his fastball away from right handed hitters. Tripp’s fastball was consistently in the 83-84 mph range and he showed good control of the location and movement on this pitch. Most of Tripp’s curveballs were in the 66-67 mph range and showed good 11 to 5 break. Every once in a while he’d mix in a bigger curveball in the 62 mph area to show something different. Tripp’s 69-71 mph change up had the same type of sinking action that his fastball had. Overall, there are some things about Tripp’s arm action and mechanics that are unconventional but it gives him deception and certainly doesn’t seem to effect his control. He’s a young pitcher that college coaches are going to have to watch closely. He projects to get bigger, stronger and add velocity. And he's already a junior lefty throwing mid 80s in the off season.
