Hiles would have been one of the national leaders in innings pitched at Perfect Game/World Wood Bat Association events in 2003, if such a category was kept (it isn’t). He’s a physically strong, mature young man with a unconventional low ¾’s release point. Hiles was 86-89 mph in Fort Myers and we’ve seen him touch the low 90’s in the past. He gets extremely good sinking and boring action on his fastball, so much that he has trouble controlling the pitch at times. We also don’t keep track of broken bats at events, but Hiles has notched up a few pieces of wood. Hiles breaking ball is a 71-75 mph slurve from the same release point that has tight spin and good depth to it. He is a work horse type who seems to get stronger the more he throws and gets outs in a hurry when he gets tuned into the lower half of the strike zone. He’s signed to attend Tennessee Wesleyan U. He could end up being a mid 90s guy.
