2005 South Underclass Showcase
Wathen is a 5-8, 160 lb freshman third baseman from Houston with a very young body and face. The game is a little fast for this 14 year old and the wood bat a bit heavy but he competed very well against the older players and played above his present tools in the games. Wathan made all the routine plays at third base and showed an accurate throwing arm with developing arm strength. At the plate Wathen has a level line drive swing and was able to make good contact almost every time up at the plate. As he gets stronger and gets more quickness and extension in his swing the contact should get harder and harder. Wathen also pitch an inning to close a game, throwing a 72 mph fastball from a cross body delivery that gives his fastball good tailing action. Wathen's curveball was 64 mph. He has good piching mechanics and was able to throw strikes consistently. We liked the way that Wathen played the game and look forward to seeing him down the road as he adds strength and quickness.
