Derek Cunningham is a 2017 OF/RHP with a 6-2 190 lb. frame from Lafayette, CO who attends Boulder HS. Large frame, lean build with wiry strength. Body projects for additional size with strength. Right handed hitter with an open stance and high leg kick trigger. Launches to contact with a naturally lofted swing path and rotational lower half actions. Primarily uses a gap to gap approach while swinging with intent to drive the baseball. Shows the barrel skills to hit to all fields with solid pop to opposite field as well. Baseball produces good backspin to the gaps when getting through extension with balance. Worked out defensively from the outfield showing a loose arm action with good whip that produced on line throws with carry, topped at 82 mph. Smooth footwork while closing on baseball with clean, athletic actions throughout transition. Also pitched using a simple side step delivery to a medium leg lift gather. Creates a shorter arm action at sepeartion while releasing from a high three-quarters arm slot. Arm slot produces some downhill angle and arm side run on a fastball that topped at 80 mph. Uses lower half very well when driving to the plate with drop and drive mechanics. Curveball has 11/5 shape with good bit and depth when releasing from the high three-quarters slot. Flashed a slider from a slightly lower arm angle that showed softer spin with some tilt. Also showed a changeup with some occasional fading actions in the low 70's. Works the bottom of the strike zone often with developing command on the edges of the plate. Good student as well.
