Garrett Griffin is a 2006 RHP/OF from Santa Monica HS, residing in Santa Monica, CA, with a 6'1", 185 lb. frame. He has a strong, athletic type build with sloped shoulders, a positive for pitchers. Griffin pitches from over the top slot and has good arm speed. He opens his front side very early which takes away a lot of the velocity that his arm strength and arm speed naturally create. Certainly most quality pitching coaches can make some adjustments with Griffin and coax a significant amount of velocity out of him. His velocity reading from the outfield was better than on the mound, further illustrating the need for some mechanical work. He can tilt the fastball (76-77 at this event), gets some lateral shape on his curveball (62-64) that also has good spin. He flashed what looked to be a slider (71), though it could have been a change-up (71) that cut some. Griffin keeps the ball down in the zone well, which will be a benefit when his velocity spikes. At the plate he hits from a slightly open stance and is a spray type hitter with liveliness in his bat. He has good bat speed and attacks the ball. Griffin has a raw natural-type approach to hitting. It is not a technical, mechanical type of swing, nor is he just looking for his pitch in his zone. He gets in the box and is ready to hit, a great attribute. Griffin's hands work well to the ball and he has some strength. He plays aggressively in the field and the ball exits hand well from the outfield. He made low arc throws. Griffin is a plus student with some interesting natural abilities, and is a player to follow for some strong academic programs that compete at the smaller four year level of college baseball.
