Jake Hovis is a 2007 OF/3B with a 6'2'', 154 lb. frame from Stevenson Ranch CA, who attends Hart HS. Selected as a Top 10 Prospect at this event. Hovis is the type of player a scout keeps his eyes on at all times. His tool set is quite good and you just get the feeling that he can do something to a wow level each time he hits or has a chance to make a play. He has a lively body, with lean, athletic proportions and some twitch fiber, though it does not come out as well in terms of running speed. It is his bat speed and arm speed that are the liveliest tools. Hovis is an aggressive hitter, with a plus hitting approach, meaning that when he steps in the box, he is there to hit, with intent to hammer the ball each at-bat. He has plus bat speed and displays good timin, routinely centering the ball on the barrel. His barrel stays in the zone a long time, showing good present day power and the promise of more in the future, to all fields. Hovis has strong hands and good plate coverage. He can drive the ball the other way, without sacrificing much, if any power. He is a very exciting hitting prospect and not just at the college level. Defensively Hovis shows off a strong, fast arm that plays anywhere in the outfield. He has lively movements to the ball and an excellent defensive approach. Consider him an athlete that can play all three outfield positions. Long term, he projects well as a right fielder. Hovis is a good student and has at the very least two above average tools. He is an impact D1 prospect and should also get pro attention this spring.
