Justin Poovey is a 2007 right hand pitcher from South Caldwell HS, residing in Granite Falls, NC. He has a 6'1" 180 lb. frame that is athletic and strong, with some life. Poovey is quite talented and ranked #37 among PG National Top 85 pitchers. Poovey has a good arm, a lively arm. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot with an arm action that is loose and quick. There is minimal effort in his arm stroke and the speed of his arm combined with the long arc, creates an awful lot of arm speed and life on his stuff. He creates good leverage and his stuff gets downhill well. Poovey has good body control and gets that long arm to very nice extension, adding to the life on his stuff. With a rhythmic delivery, Poovey looks to be very durable, with a significant opportunity to gain 3-5 more mph's on the fastball. He showed up to 92 mph in the showcase and pitched in the 89-90 range, quite comfortably. His extension created late life on the fastball, with a chance to develop a very good sinker. Poovey's breaking ball had slurvy shape and mid-70s velocity. The more aggressive he got with his arm, the better bite that pitch had. His arm slot is absolutely perfect for the change-up, though he did not show any in his two inning stint. Poovey is a top level D1 arm and at this point looks like he should gain top 10 round draft consideration in the spring, especially if his stuff explodes, which it just could do.
