Curtis Van Waardenberg is a 2008 RHP/3B with a 5'11'', 195 lb. frame from San Jose CA, who attends Prospect HS. He has a thick, strong, stocky build. Despite a build that says "catcher" more than "pitcher", Van Waardenberg has a nice clean arm action. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot, with a long arm stroke that is pretty loose and easy, while creating good arm speed. Van Waardenberg competes well on the mound and he has some arm strength. He flashed good run on his 82-85 mph fastball and some sink on a two-seamer. With better angle, his fastball will be more effective against good hitters. His curveball (68 mph) has some depth and occasionally "rolls off the table." With a bit tighter rotation he will get more snap on that pitch. Van Waardenberg has quality stuff and could gain some velocity if he can keep control of his body. At the plate he showed some raw power and stays behind the ball at contact. He showed strength and made a lot of good barrel contact. Academically he may be headed the JC route, which would be good for his development as a pitcher too.
