2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Cody Fierro is a 2006 1B/OF from Newbury Park HS, residing in Newbury Park, CA, with a 6'3", 195 lb. frame. Fierro was named to the Top Prospect Team. He has a strong and athletic build, with broad shoulders. He has plus bat speed and gets the bat aggressively through the zone. His swing explodes through contact and produces an easy power stroke, to all fields, including oppo drive power. Fierro's approach is quiet, in some cases a bit too quiet. He hits from an upright and square stance, with his hands held quietly at shoulder level. He basically starts his hands from a standstill, leading me to believe that with a more rhythmic trigger that he will develop even more power. He is more than just a power prospect, he also is capable of hitting for average. He doesn't have to make barrel contact to be able to get hits. On defense he has very soft and sure hands. Fierro is an excellent defensive player, the kind of first baseman that automatically makes every infielder and team better because of his ability to complete plays and save runs. He works below the ball and is excellent at digging low throws in the dirt. Fierro works the bag well with his light feet. His arm has some carry, though is a bit of an overhand, iron mike type stroke. He has athletic actions and clearly loves to play defense. On the mound he has feel for three pitches, but his status as a prospect is due to his bat and glove. Fierro has a bright future with the bat and potential gold glove type abilities with the glove.
