2005 California Top Prospect Showcase
Cody Schilling is a 2006 RHP/INF from Union Mine HS, residing in Placerville, CA, with a 5'10", 145 lb. frame. Schilling has a wiry, lean body type. His clean arm action, combined with his body type, suggests significant velocity gains in the coming years. He pitches from a high 3/4 slot and has an easy, rhythmic delivery. Schilling has very good feel for three pitches. His fastball (78-80) has a lot of arm side run and occasional sink. His curveball has good depth, tight spin, and late action. His breaking ball (69-72) has a chance to be an out pitch or one that he can use to steal a strike. Schilling has the ability to change shape of his curveball, a rare ability for a young pitcher. He also has feel of what appeared to be a circle change-up (70-71) with good arm side run. He is a ground ball pitcher and an out getter because he forces contact, while keeping the ball down in the zone and changing speeds. Schilling only lacks physical maturity to be considered a D1 prospect. As for his abilities as a position player, he showed good hands on defense and the ball exited his hand well. His body control and balance is good in the field, at the plate, and on the mound. He is a good student and should be strongly followed this spring due to his pitchability and arm action.
