2006 Southeast Top Prospect Showcase
Josh Vining is a 2007 RHP/C/IF with a 6'1'', 185 lb. frame from Swainsboro GA, who attends Metter HS. He has an athletic body and a strong lower half. Vining has a quick loose arm with compact mechanics, as one would expect with a dual pitcher/catcher. Vining hides the ball well and repeats his delivery. He could get better extension out front, which results in a pretty straight fastball. Vining's vastball was 82-84 mph. His best pitch was a 71 mph curveball that was very sharp at times. He also threw a 73 mph change up. Vining showed prospect tools as a catcher as well. He threw 74 mph during catching drills with a best pop time of 1.98. His swing was short and quick and Vining had good bat speed. He hits with low hands and a hand hitch, which leaves him out of hitting position occasionally, but he made solid line drive contact when he got his hands up and over the ball. Vining's pitching and catching/hitting skills are about equal right now but he projects better as a position player and this might be the best long-term place for him. He has the overall skills to be a real asset in the right college program. Vining is also an excellent student.
