EMERSON, Ga. – It’s every baseball player’s goal to continuously improve and eventually get the opportunity to take his game to the next level, whether that be college or pro ball, but not everyone has the ability and drive to make that happen. Brody Wofford, the No. 187 ranked high school prospect in the 2015 class and No. 23 prospect in Georgia for the class, has had a summer to remember, dramatically soaring up the rankings while verbally committing to play baseball at Louisiana State University.

“I had a couple other schools looking at me – Oklahoma and Kennesaw State – and I just weighed the options and scholarship offers and felt LSU was the right fit for me,” said Wofford. “They have a really good program. They’re losing some players to the draft and some are seniors and I would like the opportunity to play for a starting spot as a freshman. They’re gonna get me better and get me to the next level, which would be pro ball.”

The 6-foot-2, 180-pound shortstop had no such offers at this time last year, at least not from the premier programs like the ones mentioned. Working hard in the offseason to improve, Wofford is a perfect example that determination and hard work yields positive results.

“It’s really cool,” Wofford said. “It took a lot of work and dedication to move up so many spots. To start the summer I was just a High Follow.”

Wofford’s busy summer included a trip to Fort Myers, Fla. for the prestigious invite-only Perfect Game National Showcase, where he got to display his tools in front of a plethora of college recruiting coordinators and professional scouts.

He made quite an impression in the spotlight, running a 6.91-second 60-yard dash, throwing 91 mph from the outfield and 90 mph from the infield. The left-handed hitter’s batting practice session was also impressive enough for the Perfect Game scouts to mention in the notes, saying Wofford “has a nice quick swing with lots of rhythm and balance in his approach”.

“It was awesome,” said Wofford. “I got to meet a lot of other really good players and it was just a great experience, really. It was one of the best weekends of my life so far.”

His memorable baseball summer continued at the Area Code Games in Long Beach, Calif. about a month after the National Showcase. That is where Wofford said he had one of the best performances of his summer and really turned a lot of heads.

Wofford has played in six Perfect Game events in 2014 alone and has participated in an impressive 18 Perfect Game events throughout his high school career.

“You can get seen by everyone and you’re playing with the best competition in the world,” Wofford said. “You just see how you match up with everybody and it’s just a really good thing.”

Wofford credits his exposure through Perfect Game events, combined with his work ethic and goal-oriented personality, to get him to where he’s at now.

“I hit all the time and I’m always working out and just trying to keep improving,” said Wofford.

After the enormous strides he had taken in his game this summer, there’s no doubt Wofford will continue to improve and it will be Baton Rouge, La. who will get to witness his progression.

Wofford took just one unofficial visit to LSU before making his decision, but he will head back down in November for his official visit, which includes a ticket to the football game against Alabama. He is happy to have made his decision now, though, and looks forward to a fun official visit.

“I can just focus on playing ball now and just keep working and getting better,” Wofford said.

The motivated shortstop gives Louisiana State’s 2015 recruiting class nine commits so far, all in the Top 500. Wofford is among four commits ranked in the Top 200 and is LSU’s highest-ranked shortstop commit for the class. LSU’s 2015 recruiting class currently ranks 22nd.
