A
key piece for the Oklahoma Sooners making a run this spring is
righthanded sophomore Jake Elliott, who has be terrific for Coach
Pete Hughes to this point in the season. Standing at 6-foot-7,
Elliott opened the season with seven shutout innings against Notre
Dame, allowing only two hits and followed that up with another strong
seven innings yesterday, allowing just one earned run and three hits,
picking up his second win of the spring. Despite his length, Elliott
does a nice job of repeating his arm action, showing three pitches
for strikes and projects for more velocity as he continues to
increase his overall strength.
With
a full arm action coming through the backside, Elliott stays balanced
through his delivery and generates nice extension out at release. He
will occasionally open his front side early, causing his arm to drag
and elevate the pitch but that will continue to smoothen out with
more repetition. When everything is online in his delivery Elliott is
able to generate nice downhill plane on his fastball that worked
89-92 mph throughout the game, touching 93 in the middle innings.
From early on Elliott did a nice job of commanding both sides of the
plate with his fastball and getting ahead in the count which allowed
him to mix in both of his off speed pitches.
His
changeup was the most effective secondary in this outing and he
generated plenty of swings and misses with the pitch. Throwing it in
the 78-81 mph range, the ball comes out of his hand looking like a
fastball until the late tumbling action to arm side at the late
minute. Elliott ended one inning with a changeup that he located well
to his arm side on a righthanded hitter, getting late fade to the
hitter’s back foot for a swinging third strike (one of seven
strikeouts on the day). He wasn’t as consistent with his curveball
as he would get around the pitch and leave it up a bit but when he
was on top it was a solid third offering. Elliott’s feel for the
pitch developed throughout the game and was consistent with the pitch
towards the end of his start. At its best, the pitch shows 12-to-6
shape with depth in the mid-70s.
