Crownover prepares for future | Video Vault | Weekend Preview
Texas-Arlington
7, No. 13 UC Santa Barbara 5
Throughout
the first handful of weeks this spring, there may not be a single
player who has seen his name shoot towards the top of team’s lists
quite like UC Santa Barbara’s Dillon Tate. And don’t be
misconstrued, it’s not like Tate was this unknown arm with
virtually no known track record coming out of the middle of nowhere.
During his prep days at Claremont High School he worked in the
upper-80s and since getting on campus he gained over 20 pounds of
muscle and has seen his velocity climb more than a couple of ticks
the last three years.
Last
spring Tate’s prospect resume really began to grow working out of
the back end of the Gaucho’s bullpen, throwing 43 innings while
collecting 12 saves en route to being selected as a member of the USA
Collegiate National Team. With the Red, White and Blue Tate continued
to show an electric fastball, proving to be a true stopper at the
back end with a fastball that has approached double digits and a
stronger overall feel for a three-pitch mix.
It’s
the feel for his arsenal that had scouts intrigued about what the
young, athletic fireballer would look like were he to be put into a
starter’s role. With an early season injury to a member of the
Gaucho’s starting rotation, the coaching staff went ahead and
bumped Tate into a starting role and the rest is history.
