13u Championship Recap: Day 5

Jordan Posway
Only two teams are left standing after day five of the PG Super25 13u National Championship. Dynasty 13u and Roadrunner Baseball survived the semi-final round, and they will meet tomorrow morning in the National Championship game. Here’s a summary of Wednesday’s action:

Courtesy of a seventh inning surge, Dynasty 13u overcame a one-run deficit to stun Team Select 8-6 in the first semi-final contest of the day. Reid Ricard accounted for three hits on the day, including the RBI single that ignited Dynasty’s late rally. Team Select hit their stride in the fifth inning with Samuel Infante’s two-run single to left field, but they would come up empty in the final inning. Joseph Jorge retired the side in the bottom of the seventh to reserve Dynasty a spot in the PG Super25 13u National Championship game.

Roadrunner Baseball survived a nail-biter against the Georgia Team Combat to join Dynasty 13u in the National Championship game. A wild pitch and Calin Smith’s second inning triple catapulted the Roadrunners to a 3-0 lead, but Team Combat would respond the following inning. Josh Shuler and Lukas Cook were at the forefront of Team Combat’s four-run resurgence that recaptured the lead. The Roadrunners consistently put the ball in play and took advantage of errors to leapfrog Team Combat once more going into the seventh inning. Team Combat closed the gap to just a single run after a defensive error, but Caleb Bohn shut the door on their comeback as the Roadrunners prevailed 8-7.

The Central Jersey Warriors churned out 17 hits as they clobbered the Indiana Bulldogs 13-2 in five innings. Teddy Sharkey was effective on the mound for the Warriors, pitching all five innings and allowing zero earned runs. Anthony Corbin drove in three runs on two hits, including a two-run triple in the fourth inning to cap off an electrifying performance at the plate.

The Richmond Braves outlasted Team Rawlings PBF 8-3 at CenturyLink Sports Complex. The two teams exchanged leads through the first three innings, but the Braves seized the lead for good in the fourth inning. Ryley Johnson and Thomas Keehn powered their team to victory with four RBIs combined in the winning effort.

A four-run second inning propelled the Giants Baseball Club past the Diamond Jacks 6-2 in seven innings. With eight hits apiece, the two teams were on par with each other statistically speaking, but the Giants simply made the most of their opportunities. The Giants’ Yatzel Negron and Raul Garcia kept the damage to a minimum from the hill, while Hector Martinez-Perez and the offense built an insurmountable lead.

The Dallas Mustangs trampled the FBH Angels 9-1 courtesy of an incredible third inning in which the Mustangs drove home seven. Aaron Tesei drove home three of the seven runs with a bases-loaded triple. Josh Stephan was a steady presence on the mound, as he allowed just one run in five innings of work.

The East Cobb Astros saved their best for last against the GoWags LumberKings. Bryce Thompson and company scored five runs in the sixth inning to oust the LumberKings 9-3. Thompson’s sixth inning single to left field plated two of his four RBIs on the day. The GoWags would also fall short in their second contest versus the Florida Burn Tampa. A big four-run second inning, highlighted by Kelvin Laroscain’s three-run double, scorched the LumberKings 5-3.

The Tri-State Arsenal finished strong with seven runs in the final three innings, but they would come up one run short of the 643 DP Cougars-Sterling. Drew Miller was a perfect 3-3 from the plate, compiling two RBIs with three singles. Arsenal’s Joseph Richardson led the comeback bid with two RBIs of his own, but a two-run outburst by the Cougars in the top of the seventh would put the game out of reach.

Connor Brown and Will Jones kept the Florida Stealth’s offense to a minimum, as the Legends Prospects stormed back for a 6-2 victory in seven innings.  Jones had an impressive outing as he was the game’s winning pitcher and leading scorer.

The Texas Express handled the Akadema Diamond Stars Titans with ease. Excellent pitching and opportunistic hitting lifted the Express over Akadema 11-2 in a short five inning contest. William “Ocho” Ibarra continued to build on his excellent tournament with two hits, including a three-run triple in the third inning.

The SC Bulldogs bounced the SWFL Starz 6-2, thanks to a late five-run rally. Gabriel Sibert and Zaki Anderson led the Bulldogs’ sixth inning offensive resurgence with three RBIs on two extra base hits to claim the lead for good.

Dynasty 13u and the Roadrunner Baseball will square off tomorrow morning at 8:00 am to determine the 2015 PG Super25 13u National Champion.
