14u Championship Recap: Day 4

Jordan Posway
the first round of the championship bracket concluded on Sunday, and four teams have earned the right to participate in the PG Super25 14u National Championship semi-final round. Here’s a recap of Sunday’s events:

Gregory Verano commanded the hill for the Zoned RedHawks, and led his team to a 3-1 victory over the KBC Red. Verano allowed zero earned runs and struck out five in his complete game performance. Ryan MacKenna drove in two of the RedHawks’ three runs with a triple in the first inning and a single in the third.

Neither the Adirondack Heat-Black nor the CBC Elite could separate themselves, as their seven inning contest resulted in a 2-2 draw. The CBC Elite took a 2-0 advantage following the third inning, but Lewis Clarke and Dave Yankowski brought home two runs to equalize the score in the fourth. The CBC Elite made sure their next contest against HP Baseball didn’t end in a similar fashion. The Elite trailed HP Baseball until the fourth inning, where they overcame a 3-0 deficit with a six-run outburst. Leo Lizardi was the mastermind behind the Elite’s resurgence. His three-run double was the shining moment in the Elite’s 7-4 triumph.

A five-run rally in the fifth inning propelled the Michigan Blue Jays past the Game Time Bulls 7-1. Cameron Weston was 2-2 from the plate, and he got the Blue Jays rolling in the fifth inning with an RBI double. Blake McRae pitched a complete game and struck out seven en route to being named the winning pitcher.

The Diamond Jacks never surrendered the lead to the FBH Angels following a five-run explosion in the top of the first inning. Mike Cilio had an exceptional outing, allowing one earned run in over six innings of work. Cilio also kick-started the Diamond Jacks’ first inning outburst with an RBI single. Nick Diaz racked up a game-high three RBIs as the Diamond Jacks grounded the Angels 9-4. Unfortunately for the Angels, their ensuing match-up versus the Austin Banditos-Ford resulted in a second consecutive defeat. James Lewis frustrated the Angels’ batters for seven innings as the Banditos clobbered the Angels 7-3.

JJ Molina-Gonzalez was absolutely brilliant on the mound as FTB Mizuno squeaked by the EM Majors. Gonzalez subdued the Majors’ potent offense, allowing a mere four hits over seven innings. Neither team could muster up a single run of offense. It was a second inning error that would doom the Majors in their 1-0 defeat. With the win, FTB Mizuno advanced to the semi-final round.

The East Cobb Astros rode Caleb Reis’ arm to a 5-1 victory against the formidable Dallas Tigers-Hernandez. Reis baffled the Tigers’ batters, allowing one earned run in seven innings. Gavin Lee and Justin Wrobleski accounted for two RBIs apiece as the Astros qualified for the semi-final round.

An excellent two-way performance by Drew McGowan led the Kentucky Prospects to a 4-1 triumph over the Tri-State Arsenal-Carter. McGowan pitched a complete game, but his fantastic outing didn’t end there. He finished the day 2-3 from the plate, as he tripled in the first inning and singled in the third. The Prospects will meet the East Cobb Astros tomorrow in the semi-finals.

The South Florida Prospects simply could not keep up with the KBC Blue’s dynamic offense. Following a four-run barrage in the third inning, the KBC established a 7-1 advantage which would last for the rest of the game. Ullom John led the offensive charge with two singles and a triple on a perfect 3-3 day from the plate.  Following their latest victory, the KBC Blue has a date with FTB Mizuno in the semi-final round.

A clutch seventh inning single by Nick Embleton lifted the GoWags RiverCats over the Legends Prospects 3-2. His walk-off hit was the cherry on top of a phenomenal 3-3 day from the plate.

The East Cobb Braves survived a thrilling battle versus the Marucci Bulls courtesy of Austin Daman’s two-run double in the fifth inning. Dylan Rogers spelled starting pitcher Eli Weiner, and put together two hit-less innings to secure the 6-3 victory for the Braves.

Facing a 5-2 deficit, the RI Eagles composed a five-run rally to recapture the lead and stun the Oklahoma Rawlings Prospects-Ritter 7-5. Jack Whorf was 1-3 from the dish, but he delivered when it mattered most. Whorf’s fifth inning single broke the five run tie and shifted the game into the Eagles’ favor.

The four semi-finalists will congregate at City of Palms Park tomorrow morning. FTB Mizuno and the KBC Blue will square off at 8:00, while the Kentucky Prospects and the East Cobb Astros will duke it out at 10:15.
