9u Championship Recap: Day 1

Jordan Posway
The PG Super25 9u National Championship kicked off this afternoon at the East Cobb Baseball Complex in Marietta, Georgia. It was warm, sunny, and a perfect atmosphere for baseball. Here’s a rundown of the events from day one:

The Elite Gamers-Garner were relentless in their 10-1 triumph over the KBC 9u. The Gamers racked up twelve hits, but none bigger than Tristan Strickland’s solo shot over the center field wall. Hits were hard to come by for the KBC, as Evan Doss and Luke Garner surrendered only two hits in five innings of work. Landen Granger starred in the Gamers’ ensuing matchup versus the MOAB Dragons. Granger struck out seven in his three inning stint on the rubber, but his contributions did not end there. His 2-3 day from the dish helped push the Gamers over the top 4-2.

The Oklahoma Mudcats were hot on Full Potential Sports’ trail following the fourth inning, but a six-run explosion in the fifth inning by Full Potential Sports broke the game wide open. Jacob Mader-Cooper’s three-run double in the fifth inning closed the door on the Mudcats’ comeback bid and secured the 11-4 victory.

Facing a seven-run deficit in the final inning, the Banditos displayed tenacity with an admirable rally. However, their efforts were not enough to topple the Game On Wolfpack, who would hold on for the 10-8 win. Tai Peete recorded a game-high three RBIs courtesy of a bases-loaded triple in the third inning.

To say the Georgia Yard Dogs fired on all cylinders would be an understatement. The Yard Dogs flat-out dominated from the first pitch to the last in their 23-3 drubbing of the North Wake Crush. As if their ten run advantage wasn’t enough, they tacked on another thirteen in the fourth inning. Jacobi Brooks had himself an extraordinary day, tallying six RBIs off of two singles, a sacrifice fly, and a groundout. In their following contest against the Cherokee Reds, it was more of the same. The Yard Dogs jumped out of the gate with a six-run outburst in the first inning that would carry them past the Reds 9-1. Six players on the Yard Dog earned at least one RBI in a complete team effort.

The Titans-Orange followed suit with a twenty-run triumph of their own against the Pro Player Canes. Austin Robinson exerted his will with two long balls in the third and fourth innings. Robinson finished the day 3-3 from the plate with five RBIs. An eight-run fourth inning put the finishing touches on the Titans’ 20-2 win over the Canes.

The Carolina Heelz and the Banditos exchanged the lead several times in a back-and-forth six inning brawl. Tyler Green commanded the mound for the Heelz, but had a rough outing as he gave up five runs in as many innings. However, he was dynamite on offense. His second double of the day put him in scoring position and set the stage for Nick Ricci. Ricci connected for a walk-off single that scored Green and lifted the Heelz to an 8-7 victory.
