9u Championship Recap: Day 3

Jordan Posway
The stakes were high on day three of the PG Super25 9u National Championship as it marked the last chance for teams to jockey for position within their respective pools. Some teams flourished and some teams faltered. Here’s a brief synopsis of the events from Thursday in Marietta:

The Elite Gamers-Garner continued to wreak havoc in the tournament as they outperformed the Carolina Heelz 12-4 for their fourth straight win in pool play. Jansen Kenty drove in three runs with a sacrifice fly in the first inning and a single in the fourth. A five-run fourth inning by the Gamers was the exclamation point on a dominant win.

The Carolina Heelz would redeem themselves with a 9-2 thrashing of the Game On Wolfpack. The Heelz scored all nine runs in the first three innings due in large part to Nick Ricci, who brought home three runs on a 2-3 day from the dish. Corbin Bailey kept the Wolfpacks’ offense silent, allowing a meager four hits in five innings of work.

Cash Williams and the Mudcats stomped the North Wake Crush 5-0 in six innings on Field 8. Williams tossed four scoreless innings and surrendered one hit to the Crush. The Mudcats grabbed the lead for good after Braylon Brooks’ two-run single to left field in the second inning.

The Georgia Yard Dogs prolonged their streak of dominance as they coasted to a 7-1 victory over Full Potential Sports. Antwan Parks was a force to be reckoned with, recording two RBIs on a pair of doubles. Antonio Anderson had an excellent game on the mound with five strikeouts in as many innings.

The Banditos broke their two-run stalemate with the KBC Blue in the third inning courtesy of a seven-run outburst. The Banditos never looked back as they cruised to a 13-2 victory. The winning pitcher, Matthew Scott, frustrated the KBC batters with six strikeouts over five innings.

The North Wake Crush rocked the Pro Player Canes 22-4 in a short four inning contest. Dillon Marrisett and the North Wake offense sunk the competition early with 18 runs in the first three innings. Marrisett was a single shy of the cycle as he tripled in the first inning, homered in the third, and doubled in the fourth.

The MOAB Dragons leapfrogged the KBC Blue with eight runs in the final two innings en route to a 10-6 comeback victory. Tanner Hedgepath was the hero of the game as his double in the fourth inning snatched the lead from the KBC. He finished the day a perfect 3-3 from the plate, adding a double in the first inning and a single in the fifth.

Little did Branden Floyd know his RBI single in the first inning would be the deciding factor in the Titans’ 1-0 triumph over the Cherokee Reds. Carson Mari was spectacular on the mound, pitching five shut-out innings with six strikeouts. With the win, the Titans Orange earned the final spot in the championship bracket.
