10u Championship Game Recap

Jordan Posway

It was a battle of heavyweights in the PG Super25 10u National Championship game on Field 7. The Midland Blackhawks looked to claim a second straight national championship with a win on Wednesday, but the hometown 643 DP Cougars stood in their way. After six highly competitive innings, the streak came to an end as the Cougars bested the Blackhawks for the 3-1 win and the title of 2015 National Champions.

On the mound, the Cougars’ Kenton Collier was a force to be reckoned with. He struck out four and allowed one run in a brilliant complete game performance. The Cougars piled on all three of their runs in the first inning courtesy of two base hits by Zeke Moore and Jeffrey Heuer. In response to the Cougars' three-run outburst, Carter Sunderman took over and pitched three scoreless innings to give the Blackhawks a fighting chance.

The Blackhawks’ offense had trouble against Kenton Collier during the first five innings, but their bats came alive in the top of the sixth. They strung together three hits and drove in a run to close the gap to just two. With the tying run aboard and the winning run at the plate, the pressure was on Collier to deliver. Collier responded as he barraged the batter with three consecutive strikes to record the final out and put Midland’s comeback bid to rest.

The 643 DP Cougars suffered two losses to in pool play, but saved their best for last with three huge wins over some of the top teams in their age division. Kenton Collier was honored as the MVP of the tournament while Carter Sunderman received the MVPitcher award, albeit in a losing effort. Congratulations to the 643 DP Cougars, the 2015 PG Super25 10u National Champs!
