The
grandfather of all showcases, the Area Code Games, began its
eight-day run at the equally venerable Blair Field in Long Beach,
Calif., on Tuesday. The Area Codes started as a California-only
event in 1987 and quickly expanded to a West Coach event and
eventually a national-based event that leans more to the West Coast.
An Area Code Underclass event was added three years ago and will be
run August 9-11.
Like
the recently completed East Coast Professional Showcase, the Area
Code teams are geographically based and organized completely by pro
scouts. There are 32 Perfect Game All-Americans rostered, with the
White Sox (Midwest) leading the way with eight such players.
