NAIA Will Have Its Own Clearinghouse

Many ballplayers, parents, coaches and guidance counselors have heard about the NCAA Eligibility Center, although some still refer to it as the NCAA Clearinghouse. Now this same target audience will begin hearing about the NAIA Eligibility Center that will open in Fall 2010.

Just as the NCAA has done for more than 15 years, the NAIA will soon require incoming freshmen to submit their high school transcripts and their ACT or SAT scores to the NAIA Eligibility Center for freshman eligibility certification. The registration process for high school athletes to register with the NAIA Eligibility Center will not open until Aug. 1, 2010. However, in April, these athletes will have the ability to learn more about the NAIA at www.PlayNAIA.org. It is anticipated that this new website will be unveiled at the upcoming NAIA National Convention which will take place April 8 - 12.



Athletes who have an interest in participating in an NAIA sports program during the 2011-12 academic year, or thereafter, will need to register with the new Eligibility Center and be certified as eligible to compete as a freshman. This certification will ensure consistency in eligibility decisions for freshmen at all NAIA programs.

While the Eligibility Center will be new for the NAIA, the academic eligibility requirements for incoming freshmen will not change. Those requirements are:

1. An entering freshman must be a graduate of an accredited high school.

2. An entering freshman must meet two of three entry-level requirements:

a. A minimum score of 18 on the ACT or an 860 on the Critical Reading and Math sections of the SAT.

b. An overall high school GPA of 2.000 or higher on a 4.000 scale.

c. Graduate in the upper half of the student’s high school graduating class.

In order for the NAIA Eligibility Center to keep high school administrators informed about the procedures that will be implemented and the academic records that will be required, high schools will be asked to email to the NAIA at HScontacts@naia.org the following information: school name, address, phone number and e-mail addresses for the principal, athletics director and counseling contact.
