Team Sheet: Auburn

Kyler Peterson
What Happened: Auburn went 2-1 in Jacksonville, winning 7-5 over Iowa, 19-8 over Wichita State, and losing 4-6 to Iowa.

Biggest Strength: Depth of lineup

The lineup is filled with contributors and guys who can provide impact in different ways. Ike Irish, Cooper McMurray, and Bobby Pierce are three solidified and proven bats that provide plenty of thump. Miami (OH) transfer Cooper Weiss and Chris Stanfield are players who both possess great bat-to-ball and can really run.

Concern: Starting rotation

The Tigers do not have a staff that is going to show real loud stuff like many other rotations in the SEC. Coming off of shoulder soreness, Joseph Gonzalez’ health remains a question mark and the staff may need younger and less experienced arms to step up.

Best Player on the Field:
Ike Irish

Irish was the team’s leading hitter as a true freshman and is taking on an even bigger role as the full time catcher in 2024. He is such a well-rounded bat and has taken the next step in his development path, looking like he’ll be a star in college baseball.

Ike Irish, C

Irish was a freshman standout for the Tigers last season, hitting in the middle of the lineup from day one and producing all year. He started in all 58 games, batting .361 with six home runs and 24 doubles. Irish spent the majority of the time as the designated hitter but will have the opportunity to be the full-time catcher in 2024. The backstop has a cannon and the arm is easily plus, allowing him to control the running game. He handled the staff well and the receiving was solid, although it will need some polish. Irish projects behind the plate long term and is a great athlete for a catcher as well. The left-handed stick has a knack for the barrel and handled premium stuff with no issues, looking comfortable in left-on-left matchups as well. He picked up a hit in each game and drew four free passes. Irish is supremely confident in the box, staring down the arms and smirking after spitting on tough pitches. He has a great eye and is a mature, disciplined hitter, unafraid to take a walk. The ball comes off well and he has above average raw power, but the swing is linear and he is likely a small swing adjustment away from getting into it more in game. He engages the ground well and possesses plus bat speed. Irish has so many hitter traits and the he only seems to be improving as a complete hitter. The catcher employs a middle of the field approach and uses all fields with ease. Irish struck out at a 19% rate in 2023, which is pretty impressive for a true freshman starting everyday. He is a leader on the team as a sophomore and is on track to be a first rounder.
