Dakota Freese was simply
perfect for PG Iowa Steel in a 6-0 victory over PG Iowa Red in an Iowa Fall
Wood Bat Scout League game on Saturday, Sept. 4 at Linn-Mar High School.
Freese (Cedar Rapids Washington,
2011) faced nine batters during his three innings on the mound and fanned
them all with a fastball that touched 90 mph. Freese, Adam Lloyd (C.R. Kennedy,
2012) and Ryan Butler (Solon, 2011) combined on a one-hitter with 16 strikeouts
all told.
Terrell Sykes (C.R. Kennedy, 2011)
and Nick Day (Solon, 2011) collected a pair of RBIs for Steel. Sykes had a
double.
Justin Wyant (Linn-Mar, 2013)
pitched two scoreless innings for the Red team with a fastball that reached 83
mph.
PG Iowa Orange 7, PG Iowa Red 1
MARION -- Zach Lashbrook
(Waverly-Shell Rock, 2011) went 2-for-2, scored two runs and drove in another
as PG Iowa Orange clipped PG Iowa Red on Sept. 4 at Linn-Mar.
Andrew Holden (Waverly-Shell Rock,
2011) pitched four scoreless innings for Orange. He struck out five batters,
allowed two hits and no walks. Tanner McClenahan tossed the final three
innings for Orange and allowed one run on two hits.
Payton Kauzlarich (Iowa City West,
2014) and Keaton Blackford (Linn-Mar, 2012) collected doubles for Red. Eric
Schenck-Joblinske (Dike-New Hartford, 2011) had a double for Orange.
PG Iowa Steel 16, PG Iowa Orange 2
MARION -- Terrell Sykes (Cedar
Rapids Kennedy, 2011) went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs as Steel thumped
Orange on Sept. 4 at Linn-Mar.
Adam Lloyd (C.R. Kennedy, 2012),
Brayton Spaw (C.R. Prairie, 2012), Ty Mougin (C.R. Prairie, 2013) and Tyler
Butz (C.R. Prairie, 2013) all had two hits for Steel. Mougin collected a pair
of doubles, Butz drove in three runs and Brennan Hammer (C.R. Prairie, 2013)
had two RBIs.
Nathan Greve (Linn-Mar, 2013)
pitched three scoreless innings for Steel with five strikeouts. Nick Day
(Solon, 2011) tossed the last two innings for Steel and hit 82 mph on the radar
gun.
Blake Seehusen (Waverly-Shell Rock,
2011) went 2-for-3 with a double for Orange. Zach Lashbrook (Waverly-Shell
Rock, 2011) also had a double for Orange.
PG Iowa Navy 10, PG Iowa Purple 6
MARION -- Greg Ludwig (Iowa City
West, 2013) went 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBIs as Navy topped Purple
on Sept. 4 at Linn-Mar.
Jordan Bahl (Lisbon, 2012) was
2-for-3 and scored three runs for Navy and Taylor Field (Newton, 2013)
went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs. Ludwig and Ben Leopold (Mount Vernon,
2011) combined to pitch five scoreless innings for Navy after the Purple team
had scored six runs in the first two frames.
Joshua Davila (Marion, 2012) went
2-for-2 for Purple. Michael Maloney (West Delaware, 2013) hit a double.
PG Iowa Navy 14, PG Iowa Purple 2
MARION -- Connor Younggreen (Mount
Vernon, 2012), Ben Leopold (Mount Vernon, 2011) and Jordan Bahl (Lisbon,
2012) all collected two RBIs as Navy rolled by Purple on Sept. 4 at Linn-Mar.
Younggreen, Marshall Kray (Mount
Vernon, 2012) and Ryan Siems (Iowa City West, 2012) all had two hits for Navy.
Leopold had a double.
Marshall Morgan (Lisbon, 2012)
pitched three scoreless innings for Navy with six strikeouts. He allowed two
hits.
Luke Hammerberg (Cedar
Rapids Xavier, 2013) hit a double for Purple.
PG Iowa Orange 11, PG
Iowa Navy 10
CEDAR RAPIDS -- In an
originally scheduled double-header combined into one 10-innng game, PG Iowa
Orange pushed across a run in the bottom of the 10th to escape PG Iowa Navy,
11-10, in Iowa Fall Wood Bat Scout League play Sept. 5 at Washington High
School.
Navy scored eight runs in the top of
the eighth to erase an eight-run deficit and tie the game at 10.
Zach Lashbrook (Waverly-Shell Rock,
2011) singled and eventually came around to score the winning run on an RBI
single from Blake Seehusen (Waverly-Shell Rock, 2011).
Collin Teslow (Durant, 2011) reached
base five times with three singles and two walks, scored a run and drove in a
run to lead Orange. Andrew Holden (Waverly-Shell Rock, 2011) was 2-for-5 with
two RBIs and Devin Guerrero (North Scott, 2012) smacked a two-run single in
Orange's four-run fourth.
Navy used singles from Jordan Bahl
(Lisbon, 2012), Kellen Yoder (Iowa City West, 2012) and Marshall Kray (Mount
Vernon, 2012), and five walks in its eight-run 10th. Jacob Sciensszinski (Mount
Vernon, 2011) contributed two hits and Dan White drove in a pair of runs.
PG Iowa Maroon 6, PG Iowa Columbia 2
MARTENSDALE - Matt Pennings (Ankeny,
2011) and Dynas Doud (Dallas Center-Grimes, 2012) combined to pitch six no-hit,
five-strikeout innings to lead Black Sept. 4 at St. Mary's High School.
Blake Marchant (Indianola, 2011) and
Nicholas Anderson (Anekny, 2011) scored on a two-run single from Andrew Darby
(South Harrison, 2011), and Darby came around on an RBI single from Doud in
Black's three-run fourth inning. Cody Munsinger (Ankeny, 2011) and Austin Vaske
(Algona Bishop Garrigan, 2012) had RBI singles in a two-run fifth, and Tanner
Marvin (Ankeny, 2011) drove in a single run in the seventh.
John Bloom (East Marshall, 2012)
rapped a two-run double in the seventh for Columbia.
PG Iowa Maroon 3, PG Iowa Columbia 2
MARTENSDALE - Matthew Johnson
(Ankeny, 2013) doubled with one-out in the bottom of the sixth and eventually
scored what proved to be the winning run on a fielder's choice Sept. 4 at St.
Mary's. Austin Vaske (Algona Garrigan, 2012) and Dynas Doud (Dallas Center-Grimes,
2012) had slapped RBI singles in the fifth and sixth innings.
Nicholas Anderseon (Ankeny, 2011),
Johnson and Vaske combined for a seven-inning four-hitter with 14 strikeouts.
Zach Sims (West Des Moines Valley,
2011) and Trevar Seibart (WDM Valley, 2011) had RBI singles for Columbia.
PG Iowa White 3, PG Iowa Black 2
MARTENSDALE - White used four walks
and a hit batsman to score two run in the bottom of the seventh and pulled out
the win Sept. 4 at St. Mary's.
Nathan Funke (Dubuque Wahlert,
2011), Sam Mrstik (Iowa City High, 2013) and Aaron Hundt (MFL Mar Mac, 2012)
combined on a seven-inning four-hitter, with nine strikeouts.
White managed just one hit against
four Black pitchers - a fourth-inning single from Mrstik. Black starting
pitcher Ethan Westphal (St. Mary's, 2011) struck out six of the seven batters
he faced in the first two innings. Cory Strable (Interstate-35, 2013) struck
out four in two innings and Zebedee Noel (St. Mary's, 2012) struck out five in
two innings of work.
PG Iowa Black 8, PG Iowa White 3
MARTENSDALE - At St. Mary's on Sept.
4, Davis Horton (Southeast Polk, 2012), T.J. Foster (St. Mary's, 2012) and
Keaton Rieks (SE Polk, 2011) combined for five innings of no-hit ball and Black
broke open a 5-3 game with three runs in the sixth and held on for the win.
David Walker (St. Mary's, 2012) and
Ethan Westphal (St. Mary's, 2011) led off Black's sixth with walks and scored
on a double from Davis Horton (SE Polk, 2012). Horton eventually scored on a
fielder's choice groundout from Jake Nauman (St. Mary's, 2012).
The three runs White scored all came
without the benefit of a hit. A double off the bat of Grant Henning (DeWitt
Central, 2014) broke up Black's combined no-hit bid.
PG Iowa White 7, PG Iowa Maroon 3
MARTENSDALE - Leading 4-3 after four
innings, White scored three runs on only one hit in the fifth to put the game
out of reach Sept. 5 at St, Mary's.
D.J. Utley (Cedar Rapids Prairie,
2012) hit a solo home run in the fourth and Preston Hoffa (Linn-Mar, 2012)
tripled and scored twice for White, which managed only three hits off a pair of
Marron pitchers.
Maroon scored all three of its runs
in the fourth, thanks to a two-run double from Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, 2011) and
an RBI single from Austin Fischer (Ankeny, 2011).
PG Iowa Maroon 11, PG Iowa White 1
MARTENSDALE - Austin Vaske (Algona
Garrigan, 2012) gave up no hits and retired 15 of the 16 batters he faced - 12
by strikeout - to lead Maroon to the crisp win Sept. 5 at St. Mary's.
Sam Mrstik (Iowa City High, 2013)
doubled with one out in the seventh off of Kyle Simpson (Des Moines Lincoln,
2011) for White's only hit. Mrstik eventually came around to score.
Maroon scored three runs in each of
the second, third and fourth innings and added two more in the fifth. Dynas
Doud (Dallas Center-Grimes, 2012), Vaske and Simpson each scored two runs
apiece with singles from Doud and Simpson.
Maroon's three runs in the fourth
came after a leadoff double from Tyler Engelhardt (Ankeny, 2012) and a walk to
Doud and consecutive singles from Trevor Collins (Iowa Christian Academy,
2012), Nicholas Anderson (Anekny, 2011) and Taylor Ostrich (Carroll, 2011).
PG Iowa Steel 9, PG Iowa Purple 0
CEDAR RAPIDS - On Sept. 5 at Washington
High School, David Yancey (Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2011), Michael Rooney (Cedar
Rapids Jefferson, 2011), Bailey Hollingsworth (Jefferson, 2011) and Brennan
Hammer (Cedar Rapids Prairie, 2013) combined on a seven inning, 14-strikeout
two-hitter.
Steel took care of this one early
with two runs in the first, one in the second and five back-breakers in the
third. Dakota Freese (Washington, 2011) singled and drove in two runs in the
third and Adam Lloyd had an RBI double in the first. Tyler Butz (Prairie, 2013)
reached base three times on errors and scored twice.
PG Iowa Black 4, PG Iowa Columbia 2
MARTENSDALE - Zebedee Noel (St.
Mary's, 2012), Ethan Westphal (St. Mary's, 2011) and Cory Strable (I-35, 2013)
cominbed on a seven-inning four-hitter Sept. 5 at St. Mary's High School.
Black scored two runs in each
of the first and third innings. Black totaled just three hits.
Trevar Siebert (West Des Moines
Valley, 2011) tripled and scored in both the second and fifth innings for
Columbia.
PG Iowa Steel 16, PG Iowa Red 2
CEDAR RAPIDS - In another dominating
performance, Steel scored 13 runs in the second inning - batting through its
16-man order - and ended this one early.
Tyler Butz (Cedar Rapids Prairie,
2013) slugged a grand slam and Terrell Sykes (Cedar Rapids Kennedy, 2011) a
two-run double to highlight Steel's second inning. Ryan Butler (Solon, 2011),
Dakota Freese (Cedar Rapids Washington, 2011) and Colby Brecht each had RBI
singles and Nathan Greve (Linn-Mar, 2013) delivered a sacrifice fly.
Dustin Spaw (Prairie, 2011), Chance
Tiedtke (Cedar Rapids Jefferson, 2012), Griffin Michael (Kennedy,
2011) and Brennan Hammer (Prairie, 2013) combined on a one-hitter.
PG Iowa Black 1, PG Iowa Columbia 0

In a game halted by lightning and
threatening weather in the top of the fourth inning, Black used its lone run
scored in the bottom of the third for the win.
Columbia had two on and one out in
the top of the fourth when the game was called.
Brock Daniels (Southeast Polk, 2012)
doubled and scored in the third for the game's only run.
PG Iowa Purple 11, PG Iowa Red 10
CEDAR RAPIDS - At Washington High
School on Sept. 5, Addison Johnson (Marion, 2012) walked to lead off the
seventh inning and eventually came around to score what proved to be the
winning run.
Purple jumped to a 4-0 lead in the
first inning and led 6-2 after two, and led 10-8 after six. Johnson scored
Purple's 11th run in the top of the seventh and Red's two runs in the bottom of
the frame weren't enough.
Purple totaled 10 hits in the game
but no player had more than one. Tyler Hines (Cedar Rapids Xavier, 2012) hit a
two-run single in the first.
